
NEW DELHI, AUGUST 12: Union Home Minister L K Advani, senior Bharatiya Janata Party BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Umer Abdullah, son of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, were among 20 candidates who filed their nominations today for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on September 5.
Advani, contesting the seat for the third time, filed four sets of papers at Ahmedabad as a BJP candidate for the Gandhinagar seat.
Senior BJP leader V K Malhotra, who will take on former Finance minister and Congress nominee Dr Manmohan Singh for the prestigious South Delhi Lok Sabha seat, was among the four candidates to file nominations in New Delhi.
BJP8217;s Lal Bihari Tiwari filed his papers for East Delhi, from where he is seeking re-election.
Umer Abdullah, National Conference member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, filed his nomination for the Srinagar parliamentary constituency in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah, president of the NC8217;s youth wing, is seeking re-election.
In Haryana and Rajasthan, four candidates each filed their nominations, while two candidates each filed papers in Punjab and Tamil Nadu on the second day of the poll process for the first phase.
In the first phase, polling will be held for 13 constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, two in Goa, 26 in Gujarat, 10 in Haryana, two in Jammu and Kashmir, 15 in Karnataka, 24 in Maharashtra, 13 in Punjab, 10 in Rajasthan, 19 in Tamil Nadu, seven in Delhi and one seat each in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Pondicherry.
Polling for 91 Assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, 120 in Karnataka and 144 in Maharashtra will also be held on September 5.
