JAIPUR, AUG 27: The preliminary findings of the Rajasthan State Women’s Commission have indicated that there is substance in the case of Sandhya Bhardwaj, who had accused the district judge and a Police Inspector of Jhalawar of sexual harassment and torture after booking her in a concocted case at the judge’s behest.

Nagendra Bala, member of the Women’s Commission inquiring into the matter, said the prima facie evidence indicated that Sandhya had indeed been subjected to mental torture and indecent behaviour. Bala said she had spoken to several people, including those who were against Sandhya.

However, she said she would be able to take a clear stand only when the inquiry was completed. “I still have to speak to Sandhya Bhardwaj. After that I will talk to others on the basis of Sandhya’s statement,” Bala said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who ordered the inquiry on receiving a representation on the issue two weeks ago, had directed that the inquiry be completed and report submitted within four days. But the report on the inquiry into the role of police officers was still awaited.

According to sources, the report was ready but was lying with the police, who had not submitted it to the state government.

Hectic lobbying was on to shield police inspector Rajiv Dutta, an influential person in the Hadoti area. Dutta has enjoyed posting in the same region for the better part of his service. Recently, a huge group with representatives of various organisations of Jhalawar held a press conference in Jaipur to express support for Dutta while questioning Sandhya’s character.

Meanwhile, women activists met Rajasthan Pradesh Congress president Girja Vyas on the issue. Vyas assured them that she would send a show cause notice to the members of the party in the group.
