With so many products and treatment options available in the market, achieving healthy skin can be difficult and daunting. However, no matter what skin concerns you may have, improving the appearance and function of the skin ultimately comes down to creating a healthy barrier.

Highlighting the importance of a healthy skin barrier, Dr Veenu Jindal, aesthetic and medical dermatologist wrote on Instagram, “The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin that serves as a protective shield. The entire purpose of your skin barrier is to shield you from environmental stressors, irritation, and inflammation while holding onto moisture,” adding that a damaged barrier can leave you more prone to developing skin allergies and eczema.

So, what is a skin barrier?

According to Dr Jindal, the skin is made up of layers, each of which performs important functions in protecting it. The outermost part of the epidermis is the stratum corneum, which forms the skin barrier. She noted that the stratum corneum’s structure is often compared to being like a brick wall. “The skin cells are the bricks, and the lipid layer is mortar,” she highlighted.

Further, the mortar contains essential nutrients like cholesterol, ceramides and fatty acids. Together, these compounds are referred to as skin’s ‘natural moisturising factor’ (NMF) because they help keep the deeper layers of skin hydrated.

Adding to this, Dr Anand Toshniwal, Director of Aesthetic Aura Skin & Hair Clinic said, “The skin barrier is critical for maintaining the skin’s overall health and integrity. When the barrier is disrupted, a variety of skin disorders such as dryness, flakiness, inflammation, and infection can occur. Harsh skincare products, environmental pollutants, and certain medical diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis, can all compromise the skin barrier.”

What does the skin barrier do?

Dr Toshniwal noted, “The skin barrier has several important functions, including protection from UV radiation, pollutants and bacteria. It also helps to prevent water loss from the skin and maintain optimal hydration levels, which is essential for maintaining healthy skin.”

Simplify your skin care routine

If you have an extravagant skin care routine with various products and steps, you may be harming your skin barrier. Consult a dermatologist to understand what products are most effective for your skin type.

Try a plant oil

According to research published in The National Library of Medicine, certain plant oils may help repair the skin barrier and prevent it from losing moisture. Many of these oils have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Some of the most effective plants oil are jojoba, coconut, almond, argan and rosehip oil.

Use ceramides

Ceramides are waxy lipids found in the stratum corneum in high concentrations, which are crucial for the functioning of the skin barrier. Ceramide-rich products can help improve dryness, itchiness and scaling caused due to a poorly functioning barrier. It also strengthens the structural integrity of your skin barrier.

Add a moisturiser to your skin care routine

An occlusive moisturiser aids the skin barrier by reducing the amount of water loss from your skin. Experts recommend products that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin and honey.

Eat healthy

A good, healthy diet with whole foods and healthy fats can keep your skin looking younger and firmer. Diets rich in fish oil and antioxidants are great for your skin barrier. Also, drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.

Concluding, Dr Toshniwal said, “Using gentle, fragrance-free skin care products, avoiding over-washing, and shielding the skin from environmental stresses can all help to protect and strengthen the skin barrier.”
