Many Hindu women wear sindoor to indicate their marital status. But did you know that vermilion can also be made with contaminated ingredients? But let that statement not alarm you, as after sharing ways to identify adulterated food products like paneer, butter, and garlic, we are here to help you detect fake kumkum.

Detecting fake or adulterated sindoor is essential for many reasons, as some “adulterants can cause skin irritation or other health issues,” said Dr Karuna Malhotra, an aesthetic physician, cosmetologist, and skin expert from Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic Rajouri Garden, New Delhi.

Effects of adulterated sindoor

Skin Reactions: Allergies, rashes, itching, and redness due to harmful chemicals.

Respiratory issues: Inhaling may lead to breathing problems, mainly if it contains toxic metals.

Health problems: Prolonged use of adulterated sindoor containing lead and mercury can lead to severe health problems, including damage to the nervous system, kidney issues, or reproductive health concerns, said Dr Malhotra.

How to identify fakes?

Check the colour and texture

Genuine sindoor has a natural bright red or orange-red colour. “Fake or adulterated sindoor may have an unusual bright shine or unnatural colour (too glossy, pinkish, or too dark), which could indicate the presence of harmful dyes or chemicals,” said Dr Malhotra.

Chemical smell

Authentic sindoor generally has no strong odour. “If it smells like chemicals or metals (such as mercury), it might be adulterated,” said Dr Malhotra.

Water test

Mix a small amount of sindoor with water. According to Dr Malhotra, pure sindoor will dissolve smoothly, while adulterated sindoor may leave residue or show colour separation due to added chemicals.

Look for mercury and lead

Dr Malhotra said some fake sindoor contains lead oxides or mercury sulfides, which are dangerous to health. Always check for a certified product to ensure it is free from these toxic substances. “Avoid buying sindoor from unverified local vendors. Opt for trusted brands with proper certification, as they are more likely to follow safety standards,” advised Dr Malhotra.

Tip

To stay safe, always opt for sindoor, clearly labelled as natural or herbal and free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals.
