Delhi woke up to a hazy skyline as thick smog covered the city Thursday, significantly reducing visibility. Pollution levels soared, with private tracker AQI.in recording a staggering AQI of 548, while the Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) reported a comparatively lower 349.

As air quality deteriorated across Delhi-NCR, former IPS officer and ex-Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi appealed to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for “proactive” intervention.

“I live in Indirapuram, and the AQI is 587 right now. I have not sent my child to school inspite of teachers messages. I have written a firm mail to the principal. Whatever is in my area of control I will do that,” Kiran Bedi wrote.

She added, “Sir please intervene proactively,” calling the situation “Agonising. And depressing.”

The post quickly drew attention, with several users chiming in.

“With due respect, the ship for being called ‘proactive’ sailed probably a month back. Now it’s about atleast acknowledging and reacting if not responding and take action. The bar for accountability is seriously quite low these days. Even a reaction would be heralded as a Master Stroke,” a user wrote.

“Nationwide WFH continuation/reestablishment itself will help alleviate this,” another user commented.

“Proactive would’ve been had he done something 11 years, ago. What’s required now is an emergency response, otherwise there’ll be a civic rebellion,” a third user reacted.

Meanwhile, the Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) Sub-Committee revoked Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the NCR with immediate effect.

The Sub-Committee said the AQI has been “improving since the last three days” and is forecast by IMD and IITM to remain in the ‘Very Poor’ category in the coming days. Considering the “disruptive nature of restrictions under Stage-III” and the downward trend in pollution levels, the panel decided to take back the curb.
