Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya and husband Vivek Dahiya make an adorable couple. Admitting that Divyanka dotes on him, Vivek recently revealed that she has bought him colouring books. “I cannot sit still. I need to focus better. So, I colour 5-6 pm every day. Meri biwi ne danda maarke karana shuru karaya hai (My wife has initiated me into this activity). It is like meditation,” Vivek told Rohit Roy on the Unstoppable podcast.

Taking a leaf out of his art diary, let’s learn more about adult colouring books and their benefits.

Colouring books have transcended their child-friendly image, emerging as powerful tools for enhancing adult concentration and mindfulness. “This simple yet engaging activity offers a surprising array of cognitive benefits,” said Dr Rahul Chandhok, head psychiatrist, head consultant, mental health and behavioural science, Artemis Hospitals.

The act of colouring demands focused attention. “As you meticulously select colours and stay within the lines, your brain is actively engaged in a single task. This focused attention helps to quieten the mind, reducing distractions and improving concentration. Regular colouring can train the brain to maintain focus for longer periods, a skill invaluable in today’s fast-paced world,” said Dr Chandhok.

Moreover, colouring is a form of mindfulness. “It brings your attention to the present moment, preventing the mind from wandering into worries or plans. This state of mindfulness is crucial for reducing stress and anxiety, which are common culprits in decreased concentration,” emphasised Dr Chandhok.

The need for such mental respite has amplified in recent times. Digital stimuli, constant multitasking, and information overload increasingly dominate our lives. “These factors contribute to a decline in attention span and an increase in stress levels. Colouring offers a much-needed digital detox and a chance to unwind, allowing the mind to recharge and refocus,” shared Dr Chandhok.

Additionally, colouring stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills. “Choosing colour combinations and patterns involves decision-making, even if on a small scale. This cognitive exercise can enhance overall mental agility,” explained Dr Chandhok.

In essence, colouring books provide a tranquil escape from the overwhelming demands of modern life. “By fostering focus, mindfulness, and creativity, they offer a valuable tool for improving concentration and overall well-being,” said Dr Chandhok.
