“Serving the Fourth District of Washington has been the honor of my life, and this decision comes with no reservations or remorse, only gratitude for the tremendous opportunity to have represented my home state in Congress,” Newhouse said in a statement.
“After over 25 years of public service, including more than a decade in the House, I am grateful to the Washingtonians who put their faith in me, as well as the colleagues I have served with on both sides of the aisle,” the statement added.

70-year-old Newhouse, who was first elected to Congress in 2014, was one of the handful of Republicans to vote in favour of impeaching Donald Trump in 2021, in the aftermath of the January 6 riots.
A total of 17 Republicans, including 10 in the House and 7 in the Senate, had voted to impeach Trump.

Out of the 17, only 5 are still in Congress, including Newhouse and David Valadao, the California Representative in the House and Susan Collins, Bill Cassidy and Lisa Murkowski in the Senate.
Newhouse had defended his decision to vote to impeach Trump, saying “the mob was inflamed by the language and misinformation of the President of the United States.”
“He did not strongly condemn the attack nor did he call in reinforcements when our officers were overwhelmed. Our country needed a leader, and President Trump failed to fulfill his oath of office,” Newhouse had said.
Like other Republicans who voted in favour of the impeachment motion, Newhouse also faced the wrath of Trump.

In 2024, Trump supported MAGA-aligned Jerrod Sessler in the Republican primary. In his post endorsing Sessler, Trump called Newhouse a “Weak and Pathetic RINO” who “voted to, for no reason, Impeach me.”
