De-cluttering your home might be difficult if you’re a procrastinator or a hoarder. For those of you struggling, we talked to a decor expert, who suggested this 10-10-10 method that will change your life.

What’s the 10-10-10 method?

The 10-10-10 decluttering method is pretty easy–clean 10 things in 10 areas of your living space in 10 minutes. These ten objects can be anything. According to Devika Khosla, Creative Director at The Works Interiors, this will help you maximise the potential of cleaning up your space.

How can decluttering open your home?

Decluttering is an essential mantra for refining the design aesthetic of any space by enhancing its organisation, visual appeal, and functionality. The elimination of excess elements allows the key features to take prominence. This process contributes to a more serene, inviting atmosphere and boosts efficiency within the space.

There are three vital considerations while helping clients decide what to keep or discard, Devika said: “First, I evaluate whether each item aligns with the overall design vision.” To maintain a cohesive look, items that don’t fit the design theme or aesthetic are off the list. “Second, I assess the scale and proportion of items within the space,” she added.

Pieces that disrupt the flow or functionality due to their size or placement are reconsidered, often leading to suggestions for donation or rehoming. Lastly, the emotional and sentimental value of items such as heirlooms or gifts are understood. These pieces may not always fit the initial design plan, but can be creatively integrated or reimagined as unique elements, Devika advised. This approach ensures the final design is aesthetically pleasing and personally meaningful for the client.

Strategic planning and ensuring that every item has a designated place are crucial to an organised and functional space. Thoughtful planning ensures that each piece in the space is assigned its spot, making it easier to locate, store, and maintain, creating a sense of order and efficiency.
