Dense fog engulfed parts of North India early Thursday, with the air quality in Delhi hovering in the “very poor” category, as the Air Quality Early Warning Systems (EWS) recorded an AQI of 358, as of 7 am. Some parts of the national Capital also recorded air quality in the “severe” category, with AQIs crossing 400. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), meanwhile, issued a ‘yellow’ alert in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi today.
Airline advisories: Air India asked flyers to be ready for disruptions throughout the day as change of schedules in Delhi may cascade to other cities. IndiGo cancelled a few flights originating from Chandigarh through the day “to prioritise safety and help minimise extended waiting at the airport”, the airline shared over a post on X. SpiceJet, too, warned on Wednesday night that all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights from Varanasi might be affected. The airlines advised their passengers to check their respective websites for updated flight information.
Himachal Pradesh received light snowfall on high mountain passes and peaks, leading to a further drop in temperature in the last 24 hours. Light snow was recorded at Rohtang Pass, Kunzum Pass, Shinkula Pass and Baralacha La, while dense cloud cover had prevailed over Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul valley and adjoining areas since morning.

A blanket of haze enveloped Delhi on Thursday, reducing visibility across the city as air pollution worsened, with the 24-hour average AQI in the 'very poor' category with a reading of 373, up from 334 a day earlier, according to official data.
Out of 40 air quality monitoring stations in the city, 15 recorded 'severe' air quality. Anand Vihar registered the highest reading at 441, in the 'severe-plus' category, while 24 stations recorded 'very poor' air quality, according to the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) SAMEER app.

A girl on the way to her school was killed on the spot after being hit by a speeding dumper truck amid dense fog here on Thursday, police said.
The dumper driver fled the spot after abandoning the vehicle.

"As of now, 27 flights are cancelled -- 16 departures and 11 arrivals -- at Delhi Airport due to dense fog and low visibility," the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) official said.
In a passenger advisory Thursday morning, DIAL said due to dense fog, "flight operations are currently under CAT-III conditions, which may lead to delays or disruptions." For this type of operation, not only should the pilots be trained, but the aircraft must also be compliant.
CAT-III refers to a type of instrument landing system (ILS) approach that allows aircraft to land in conditions of very low visibility, such as fog, rain or snow, with a runway visual range (RVR) of 50-200 meters. (PTI)
As dense fog conditions continued to affect visibility across Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur, IndiGo flight movement were slowed down around the Gorakhpur airport region.

IndiGo airline warned of possible disruptions in flight schedules in Ranchi, Patna and Varanasi, early Thursday, owing to low visibility and prevailing fog conditions.

Air India, in its advisory, stated that the dense fog conditions would primarily impact flight operations in Delhi, however, the effect of the schedule alterations could cascade down to some other cities across the airline’s network.
