If your blood sugar level remains high throughout the day, do not ignore it. For instance, if your blood sugar level stays above 250 mg/dL, and you experience symptoms such as excessive urination, thirst, or fatigue, seek medical advice immediately, said Dr Pranav Ghody, consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central.

“For people with type 1 diabetes, look out for signs of ketoacidosis, such as stomach pain, nausea, or fruity breath; these need urgent help,” added Dr Ghody.

What to note?

Check your readings with a glucometer at different times, such as fasting, after meals, and at bedtime. According to the expert, this helps you and your doctor see the pattern. “High blood sugar all day could come from missed medication, poor food choices, dehydration, stress, lack of sleep, or even an underlying infection,” said Dr Ghody.

Keep a simple log of:

– Timing of meals and medication, to check for missed or delayed doses.
– Food intake, noting high-carb meals, snacking habits, or sugary drinks.
– Activity levels, as inactive periods can worsen blood sugar.
– Stress or illness, as both can unexpectedly raise glucose.

Dr Ghody explained that this record helps your doctor adjust medication or insulin more accurately instead of guessing. “Often, the reason behind uncontrolled blood sugar is found in these small lifestyle details.”

What can help in the short and long term?

– Hydrate well: Drinking enough water helps the kidneys flush out excess sugar.
– Light activity: A short walk after meals can reduce post-meal sugar spikes.
– Balanced meals: Include more fiber and protein while cutting down on refined carbs.
– Stick to medication: Never skip doses; set reminders if needed.
