Yoga, as we know, offers numerous physical and mental benefits for our overall well-being. However, there are several myths surrounding yoga during menstruation that often discourage women from engaging in this exercise. As such, it becomes crucial to dispel these myths as with proper modifications and guidance from a trained instructor, yoga can be a safe and beneficial activity during periods. In fact, embracing yoga during this time can help alleviate menstrual discomfort, reduce stress, improve flexibility, and promote a sense of calmness and balance.

Debunking such commonly-believed myths surrounding yoga and periods is Anshula Kapoor, along with yoga trainer Anshuka Parwani, in a recent Instagram post. “International Day of Yoga is almost here — so this one’s is especially for you ladies,” the caption read.

One of the most popular assumptions is that women should avoid yoga during periods. Busting this myth, Anshula said, “No, you never need to avoid practising yoga, whether you are on your period or not.”

As for inversions, Parwani said that you should always listen to your body. “If you feel any sort of discomfort, do not do inversions. There’s no scientific evidence supporting that you shouldn’t be inverting during your periods. So, listen to your body and do what you feel is right,” the yoga expert said.

Can you practise yoga twists during your periods? Of course, you can, she said. “Doing yoga during your periods is the best thing because you will be releasing your happy hormones. Your body will feel relaxed and stretched out. It’s a myth.”

Many women also fear that practising yoga during their periods can affect the duration of their cycles. “Absolutely not! In fact, having a consistent yoga practice balances your hormones and hence, you have a more regular cycle,” Parwani said. To this, Anshula added that when you do yoga during your period, you feel lesser pain.

The duo also shared some benefits of practising yoga during periods:

*Ease symptoms like menstrual cramps, bloating and backache
*Release endorphins or happy hormones in the body
*Calms the mind and leaves you feeling refreshed and pumped up
*Regularises irregular periods

Agreeing with the duo, Mansoor Balauch, a yoga guru, said that it is absolutely a myth that women are not supposed to do yoga during periods. “This is the time when the body detoxes and a little stretch can, in fact, help you release happy hormones. Poses like Childpose, Downward Dog, legs up the wall etc can actually make you feel relaxed,” he said.

However, he added that the belief that women shouldn’t indulge in advanced yoga poses, like Bow Pose, Headstand, and Handstand, during periods is right. “Because women’s body is sensitive during menstruation and lifting it can cause contradiction. The energy flow is going downwards, and turning upside down interferes with that. Basically, the blood is gushing out of you for a reason. In conclusion, stretching can help and one must avoid advanced asanas,” Balauch said.
