Soha Ali Khan, 46, currently dealing with the effects of perimenopause, recently shared a home remedy to manage Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) cramps that affect a lot of women. “Presenting the PMS Cramp Relief Tea! It’s super easy; just grate some fresh ginger and add it to boiling water, then toss in a cinnamon stick, a little honey for some natural sweetness,” Soha said on Instagram while prepping the tea.

“Quick, simple, and perfect for soothing cramps, lifting your mood, and supporting your health during those days. Ginger, cinnamon and honey are all anti-inflammatory, and cinnamon has analgesic properties,” added the Rang De Basanti actor.

Taking a cue from her revelation, let’s examine whether this tea can truly be beneficial.

Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal noted that Soha’s choice to use a tea for PMS cramp relief is in line with a widely practised traditional approach using herbs to ease menstrual discomfort. “Several teas contain compounds that can act as mild muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory agents, which may help reduce uterine cramping, bloating, and tension during the premenstrual or menstrual phase,” said Goyal.

Goyal noted that ginger tea is a popular choice as it contains gingerols that can combat inflammation and may help with cramp relief.

According to Goyal, ginger, cinnamon, and honey tea can serve as a soothing natural remedy for PMS cramps, as each ingredient offers distinct benefits. “Ginger contains compounds like gingerols that have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which may help relax uterine muscles and ease pain. It also supports better digestion, which can reduce the bloating that often accompanies PMS. Cinnamon improves blood circulation and has mild muscle-relaxing effects,” said Goyal.

Honey not only adds natural sweetness but also provides antioxidants and has a calming effect, which can help manage mood swings and provide comfort during PMS.

“Taken together in a warm tea, these ingredients may help reduce cramps, improve digestion, and provide a sense of relaxation. While they cannot replace medical treatment for severe period pain, such a tea can be a gentle, supportive addition to self-care during PMS,” said Goyal.

However, it’s essential for users to know exactly what ingredients are in the tea (some herbs may not be safe in certain health conditions) and to use it in conjunction with other supportive measures, such as rest, hydration, heat therapy, and a balanced diet.
