They are not athletes who have a planned progression with a 5-10 per cent variation, said trainer Yogesh Bhateja

Kapil Sharma’s fitness transformation happened over a long time, with much work and detail put into changing his mindset. “I was following the 21-21-21-day fat loss approach for Kapil. But he did not have much time. So, we had to make time for his workouts. His staff was supportive; they ensured he wasn’t disturbed during his one-hour workouts. His phone would be away. He would not be reachable for that duration so he could focus and not get distracted,” said Yogesh Bhateja, his fitness trainer.

Adding that people were “shocked” to see his transformation on screen in Kis Kis ko Pyaar Karoon, Bhateja told podcaster Gunjan Taneja, “Even in Firangi, for that matter.”

So, what kind of workouts did he follow?

Elaborating, Bhateja said that while the routine kept changing, the plan was to do a good workout.

“They are not athletes who have a planned progression with a 5-10 per cent variation. Also, in the entertainment industry, while there are planned commitments, there are unplanned occasions like a night appearance or a meeting. So, their energies keep changing. Sometimes, they feel driven; sometimes, they are not,” said Bhateja.

“Accordingly, the workout intensity is tweaked to 30 percent of the previous day’s. This modification is decided in the first 10 minutes. My idea is to ensure they can make it to the gym anyway,” said Bhateja.

Advocating for the need to stay fit, Bhateja said: “Fitness can change your life even if you feel emotionally depressed. It is because it gives you time to think, and your systems support you. You feel positive about the environment and yourself,” said Bhateja.

Taking a cue from his revelation, let’s understand how a flexible fitness routine can aid your fitness journey in the long term.

A flexible fitness routine adapts with you. “It lets you move based on how your body feels, how much time you have, and what’s possible today. Whether it’s 15 minutes of stretches between work breaks, dancing with your kids, or doing yoga in bed; start small,” suggested yoga trainer Mansi Gulati.

“This kind of approach isn’t lazy; it’s wise. Because it’s consistent, sustainable, and most importantly…it is kind to our body. Flexible fitness removes guilt from the equation. In the long run, it’s not the intense 60-minute workouts that change your life. It’s the small, doable ones you can keep coming back to,” added the trainer.

So, while building a routine, don’t force habits on yourself. If you miss a workout, don’t punish yourself; ask gently: What’s possible today? A short walk? A 10-minute yoga flow? Some deep breathing? Whatever it is, it counts!
