Dharmendra, 89, inspires netizens with his pool workouts: ‘Aapko aise fit dekhke bohot accha lagta hai’

Only a few can manage to do what Dharmendra does at 89. The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani actor recently sent the internet into a tizzy with videos of him enjoying himself in the swimming pool with a relaxing workout. The video post, among many others, was also liked by his son, Bobby Deol, who flooded the comments section with heart emoticons.
One user wrote, “Respect for Dharmendra, sir. Lovely human, forever,” while another shared, “Sher Dil Hero.”
Another commented, “Respected Dear Great Actor @aapkadharam Sir, wonderful time swimming exercise, so grade A++ 10/10.Your Fan”
Yet another expressed, “Wahhhhh heavy heavy! Aapko aise fit dekhke bohoot accha lagta hain“. (It feels good to see you fit)
Previously, Dharmendra was also seen doing physiotherapy to enhance his fitness. “Friends, with your good wishes and his blessings, I am working hard to be fit and fine. Yoga, exercise and ………………..now physiotherapy . I am grateful to dear Amit Kohli, my physiotherapist. Love you all, Take care,” he wrote.
Taking a cue, we asked experts how working out in the pool can help those in their 80s and 90s.

Shubhankar Thosar, swimming and water polo coach, told indianexpress.com that time spent in the pool not only helps the body work out but is also relaxing and places less strain on the joints. “Especially for people in the older age group, like in the 70s-80s, it can be a good workout under medical supervision. Since water has buoyancy, the person not only enjoys but also manages a decent workout,” said Thosar.
Concurring that water is easy on the joints, fitness coach Varun Rattan said: “Water’s buoyancy helps support body weight, which puts less stress on joints. This makes movement easier, particularly benefiting those with arthritis.”
He added that pool workouts minimise the risk of injury for seniors compared to land-based exercises.

Thosar also noted that for people recovering from spinal, hip, or knee issues, swimming or water walking helps strengthen muscles without additional strain or weight issues. Agreeing, Rattan shared, “The inherent resistance of water helps toning muscles, which is even more important at that age for maintaining independence.”

It improves mental well-being too, said Rattan. “Swimming or group water classes can reduce stress, elevate mood, and offer social interaction, combating loneliness,” he said.
