Bengal Weather Update: Kolkata shivers under severe cold spell; temperature likely to plunge further across state, says IMD

Bengal Weather Update: Bengal is reeling under an intense cold wave. Due to northerly winds, temperatures have plunged sharply across the state. On Monday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 10.2 degrees Celsius, which was 3.7 degrees below normal. The India Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore said there would be no immediate relief from the biting cold. Instead, a strong cold spell is expected to persist across South Bengal for the next seven days, with the temperature dropping another two notches by Wednesday. Cold day conditions in sub-Himalayan West Bengal during is likely till Wednesday.

Meteorologists said temperatures may drop further in the coming days. In the hilly regions of North Bengal, especially Darjeeling, there is a strong possibility of snowfall.

Bengal cold spell warning

According to the weather department, Bengal is witnessing record cold this season. The chill is expected to be most intense in around 9-10 districts of the state.

In North Bengal, Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur will be severely affected. In South Bengal, the western districts of Bankura, Birbhum and West Burdwan will experience intense cold conditions. Apart from these, Nadia, Murshidabad and East Burdwan are also likely to feel the biting chill.

In several districts of South Bengal, temperatures may plunge by up to five degrees below normal. There is also a possibility of dense fog in many districts during the early morning hours.

Weather in South Bengal

The Alipore Meteorological Department said that with no obstruction to the dry northerly winds, temperatures are dropping rapidly in South Bengal. This situation is likely to continue for the next five days. In particular, temperatures in Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum may fall below 11 degrees Celsius.

Kolkata weather forecast

Kolkata is also experiencing intense winter conditions. On Tuesday, the city’s minimum temperature stood at 10.2 degrees Celsius. According to the weather forecast, while there may not be any major change in temperatures over the next few days, a slight further drop is highly likely.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 19˚C and 11˚C, respectively, the Alipore RMC said.

Weather in North Bengal

The cold spell is set to intensify further across North Bengal. In the hilly district of Darjeeling, there is a chance of snowfall accompanied by light rain. The weather department has also predicted rainfall in Kalimpong district. Additionally, dense fog may be seen in several districts of North Bengal during the morning hours over the next few days. Overall, the state is set to witness plunging temperatures and persistent biting cold in the days ahead.

Dense fog reducing visibility (199 – 50 m) is very likely to prevail in the morning hours at one or two places over Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and North Dinajpur districts of North Bengal. Cold day Conditions are very likely to prevail over North & South Dinajpur and Malda districts of North Bengal.
