Bulleya singer Amit Mishra has come a long way. The songwriter and live performer who has gradually sung in several films, including Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, feels live shows offer a unique space for promoting the arts. As a trained musician, Mishra feels Bollywood and classical music have their niche, and the key is to take a balanced perspective.

Mishra recently performed at HCL Concerts: An Unforgettable Blockbuster Evening’ at Shiv Nadar University Delhi-NCR. He expressed his experience as “HCL Concerts have been integral in the conservation and promotion of India’s classical music space”.

On the sidelines, he talked to us about staying relevant while sharing a long list of veterans from whom he takes inspiration.

Q. What’s been keeping you busy?

Mishra: Shows, studio sessions, vocal practices, family and cricket!

Q. How do you look back at your journey?

Mishra: It was wonderful. My passion for music drives me and brings me here.

Q. What’s your idea to stay relevant?

Mishra: Passion and practice.

Q. Who do you look up to for inspiration?

Mishra: I will mail you the list! Because there can’t be a crisp answer. I look up to Rafi Sahab, Kishore Da, KK, Hariharan and many more.

Q. There is always the comparison between classical and Bollywood…how do you choose the middle path?

Mishra: Both things are important. We need to learn some things from classical and unlearn from Bollywood and sometimes you have to learn something from Bollywood and unlearn from the classical. You have to find a balance!

Q. With remakes and now AI in music, do you think it can create a dependency that limits human music potential?

Mishra: I am glad that people are making remakes. Recreations are very important because they show a melody’s recall value. The sound changes every month, every day, and recall value is apparently why people are asking for remakes and remixes. AI music so far is a good thing.

Q. What’s next for you?

Mishra: More shows!
