Hoshiarpur roads to be ready by June

Jalandhar: The upgradation of the road network at Hoshiarpur district will be completed by June,this year,Public Works Department Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said on Wednesday. He added that work was under way at five major roads in Hoshiarpur,which have reached an advanced stage.

Warrants against singer Balkar Ankheela

Faridkot: A local court on Wednesday issued warrants against Punjabi singer Balkar Ankheela in a cheque bounce case. The warrants were issued after a Faridkot resident Rajinder Kumar lodged a complaint alleging that the singer had taken Rs 1.75 lakh from him and later handed him a cheque,which bounced due to insufficient funds. Kumar in his complaint also stated that he had sent a legal notice to the singer as well,but never received a reply. The local court has asked Ankheela to be present on March 11.

Toor is new Moga SSP

Moga: Gurpreet Singh Toor,SSP,Faridkot,has been given additional charge of Moga. Ashish Chaudhary who joined as Moga SSP during elections is back to Ludhiana as SSP (rural) while former Moga SSP Surjit Singh Grewal is still on medical leave.

Sarpanch found dead in Hoshiarpur district

Garhshankar: The sarpanch of Parowal village in Garhshankar sub-division of Hoshiarpur district was found murdered at his residence on Wednesday morning. Police said sarpanch Sajjan Singh (60) had injuries that indicated that he had been hit with sharp-edged weapons. The reason for his death is yet to be ascertained. Police sources said that some drug addicts could be behind his murder as he had snubbed some of them on Tuesday over a small theft. Police have rounded up three people for questioning.

Peace centre proposed in Lahore

Chandigarh: To promote ties between India and Pakistan,a proposal for a peace centre in Lahore is being touted. The aim of the centre will be to provide affordable accommodation for Indian visitors to Pakistan. The centre is high on the agenda of Saeda Diep,director of Institute for Peace and Secular Studies in Lahore. Diep,who was in Chandigarh in connection with a peace conference,said: “A suitable location is being scouted. We hope to set up the centre with the help of philanthropists.”
