Ever since the film Barbie released, women in their 20s are seeking a new kind of botox treatment, which uses toxins to freeze a muscle for a limited time to achieve what we call a swan neck. Called “Barbie Botox,” this mimics the looks of the movie’s lead actress Margot Robbie. Considering that botox procedures are generally safe and transitory, what’s worrying some cosmetologists are some side effects in the sensitive neck region.

The procedure, called “Trap Tox,” supposedly slims and contours the neck. The US FDA approval of injections for cosmetic purposes is only limited to procedures involving the face, and not of the neck. But the larger concern is about whether the early exposure to botox, especially when done by untrained hands in medispas and beauty clinics — particularly in a sensitive area like the neck — is worth it or not.

What is Traptox?
Traptox is a procedure involving the use of botulinum toxin in the trapezius muscles of the upper back. It has gained attention for its potential to address neck tension and shoulder pain associated with a hyper-contracted trapezius muscle. While it offers promising benefits, it’s essential to weigh these advantages against the potential drawbacks.

So, what are the benefits?
Traptox can be a beacon of hope for those burdened by neck tension and shoulder pain stemming from an overactive trapezius muscle. This procedure effectively targets discomfort in this area, providing much-needed relief. This way it reduced the need for pain-relieving medication. For individuals dealing with neck spasms and persistent pain, this can be a welcome change, promoting a medication-free lifestyle. During the diagnostic and long-term management phase, Traptox offers temporary respite from shoulder pain. This can be invaluable in allowing patients to undergo comprehensive assessment and establish long-lasting pain management strategies. Apart from pain relief, it also offers aesthetic benefits. By diminishing the bulk of the trapezius muscle, it can create a visually pleasing swan neck and contribute to slender shoulders, albeit temporarily.

What are long-term side effects?
Repeated Traptox injections, especially in larger muscles like the trapezius, can lead to the development of antibodies against botulinum toxin. This may reduce the effectiveness of future injections, not only in the trapezius but also in other areas, such as the face.

Why is everybody worried about other side effects too?
Although less common, some individuals may encounter temporary speech impairment or difficulties with swallowing following Traptox treatment. These issues usually resolve on their own but should be monitored closely. Considering the effects last between four and six months, nobody would want to deal with swallowing and speech impediments that long. Traptox can lead to visible muscular asymmetry between the two sides of the neck. This asymmetry might potentially contribute to postural misalignment, which should be carefully managed through physical therapy and exercises.

In some cases, Traptox may result in exaggerated muscle weakness, which could affect normal movements. Patients should be aware of this potential outcome and work closely with their healthcare providers to mitigate it. In rare instances, especially when larger doses of botulinum toxin are used in neurological conditions like dystonia, generalised muscle weakness has been reported. This underscores the importance of precise dosing and close medical supervision. Like many medical procedures, Traptox can result in mild redness, bruising, pain, numbness or swelling in the treated area. These effects typically subside over time.

It’s essential to consult with a qualified medical professional to evaluate whether Traptox is the right option for addressing your specific concerns. Additionally, discussing your medical history and expectations with your healthcare provider is crucial in achieving the best possible outcome.
