Shreya Chaudhry, who plays the role of Tamanna Sharma in Amazon Prime Video’s highly acclaimed Bandish Bandits, is on cloud nine. The show, a millennial love story set against the backdrop of a clash between pop and Hindustani classical music, has been lauded by the audience and critics alike. As the show’s second season concludes, Shreya reflects on her experience working on the project, her training in music, and her upcoming ventures.

For Shreya, working on Bandish Bandits was a dream come true. She tells SCREEN, ”I almost felt like a rockstar while shooting for the show.” One of the most memorable experiences for her was shooting for the song “Ghar Aa Mahi,” an integral part of the show. The cast took 18 hours to shoot the sequence, which was quite complicated. “I feel very grateful to Anand (Tiwari), our director, because if you see that sequence, it is quite complicated because we are not just lip-syncing in that, we are also communicating a lot of other things between different characters.”

Shreya Chaudhry credits Anand Tiwari for his attention to detail, which helped her play her role well. “He really gave us time, and it was also something that wasn’t easy to get in the first or the second take. But at no point did he ever pressurize us to hurry it up. He gave us the time. He took care of the tiniest of tiny things to make sure everything looked right and authentic,” she adds. The entire cast was present during the shoot of “Ghar Aa Mahi,” and everyone ensured that the scene turned out perfectly. “There is no one to hold responsible for the extra shoot. It was done only for the betterment of the show. All of us were like we were not going to go home until we got this right. We didn’t even realize that we had spent 18 hours doing this. No one from the crew was even complaining,” Shreya recalls.

To prepare for her role, Shreya underwent training in singing and learned how to play the keyboard. Nikhita Gandhi is the voice of her character Tamanna in the show, but Shreya wanted to ensure that her lip-syncing, posture, body language, and expressions were perfect. Some of her trainers were from AR Rahman’s KM College of Music & Technology. “I can’t say I am a singer today. I really am not. The amount of hard work these singers and musicians put in, the years of knowledge they have, is unparalleled. We were aware that we were playing musicians. As Tamanna’s character has this transformation of going to a music school, Anand was clear that he wanted to make it look as real as possible,” Shreya explains.

On Bandish Bandits Season 3

As for the show’s future, Shreya Chaudhry is hopeful about a third season. “Obviously, we all want it to happen. It might happen. As of right now, I am not at liberty to say anything or comment on it, but I can hope for it to happen. Yes, in a way, audiences are loving season two, so we can only hope and pray that there is season 3. I am also hoping it happens,” she says.

On her next project Mehta Boys

After the success of Bandish Bandits, Shreya Chaudhry is all set to embark on her next project, Mehta Boys, directed by veteran actor Boman Irani. The film marks Irani’s directorial debut.

“Mehta Boys is another passion project,” Shreya says, her eyes lighting up with excitement. “It is written by Boman sir, co-written by Oscar winner Alexander (Dinelaris). It started as a passion project for Boman sir, but slowly it became a passion project for all of us.”

“It is primarily a take on the father-child relationship, and it was so relatable to all of us,” the actor says. “Boman sir has so beautifully empowered his character and mine in the film, with his writing. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this project,” she adds.

Shreya Chaudhry reveals that working with Boman Irani was a dream come true. “I kind of feel I manifested working with Boman sir,” she says with a smile. “I remember, about a year and a half ago, I was very keen on joining Boman sir’s screenplay writing course. I thought it could really help me. I wanted to apply for it, but at that time, something or the other kept coming up, and I was not able to join the course.”

However, fate had other plans, and Shreya soon found herself being offered a role in Mehta Boys. “And within a week or two, I got a call from Casting Bay saying that there is a film which Boman sir is acting in and directing. That’s the moment I knew I wanted to be a part of this film,” the actor concludes.
