Bharathiraja: ‘One of the greatest things I received from Modern Love Chennai is the friendship of Kumararaja’
Modern Love Chennai will be released on Amazon Prime Video across the world on May 18.

Modern Love has finally come to Tamil Nadu as well. Thiagarajan Kumararaja has put together a big team of directors, writers, and actors for the six-part anthology, which tells stories of love in the current times in Tamil Nadu. The trailer was launched on Thursday at Prasad Studios, Chennai, which was packed with all the directors and actors involved in the project.
Speaking at the event, the Aaranya Kaanda director said, “Modern Love Chennai is based on a New York Times article. We have taken the stories of New York and have changed them into something regional that will reflect the people and their lives here. I didn’t want to do something very experimental. In a conventional love story, we have tried to push the boundaries as much as possible.”
Speaking at the event, veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, who has directed the segment Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal, said, “Even at this age I am still in love, and I will say it out boldly. From the ninth standard, I have been in love. It is what makes an artiste. Without love, there’s no art. Despite all the other things that Thiagarajan does, love is what is at the core of him. I used to wonder if should I go that way (like Thiagarajan). It is a way of looking at everything intellectually. But for me it is love. One of the greatest things I received from this project is the friendship of Kumararaja.”
Here’s the trailer:
Balaji Shakthivel, who directed the iconic Tamil film Kadhal, has directed the segment Imaigal. Talking about his segment, he said, “I am just a director in the film. The major contributor to the film is director Balaji Tharaneetharan, who has written the script. It is a heartwarming tale and I am glad I got this opportunity to work with these wonderful talents–Ashok Selvan and Bhanu.”
Ritu Varma, Ramya Nambessan, Ashok Selvan, Wamiqa, Sanjula Sarathi, Chu Khoy Sheng, Srikrishna Dayal, T J Bhanu, Sri Gouri Priya, Vasudevan Murali, Vasundhara, Samyuktha Vishwanathan, Pawan Alex, Aniiruth Kanakarajan, Kishor, Vijayalakshmi and PB are part of the anthology, which has music by Ilaiyaraaja, Yuvan Shankara Raja, Sean Roldan, and GV Prakash. Cinematographer Nirav Shah has shot all the segments of the series, and talking about the experience, he said, “I can’t say no to Thiagarajan. My format is not short film. But I tried and I really loved the experience. It was short but very intense. I am looking forward to more such experiences.”
Modern Love Chennai will be released on Amazon Prime Video across the world on May 18.
