Vishal began his journey in films with the 2004 romantic drama Chellame. But it was Sandakozhi, Lingusamy’s brilliantly crafted commercial entertainer, that turned him into an overnight star. In a recent podcast on his YouTube channel, Vishal recounted how he had a hard time convincing director Lingusamy to cast him in Sandakozhi, a film originally written with Vijay in mind.

Speaking about the big break that made his career, Vishal said, “Lingusamy was a close friend of mine. He used to work with my father as an assistant director. So after making my debut in Chellame, I heard that Lingusamy had a story in mind. I took my bike and went straight to Linguiswamy’s office right away. I told him that I would do this role.”

Vishal further shared that he initially struggled to convince the director Lingusamy to cast him, as he lacked stardom at the time. “He told me that the story was written for Thalapathy Vijay, a mass hero and how can I make this with you. But I told him to just wait for ten days till the release of Chellame. You please go watch that movie. I really need this movie, man.”

The actor also recalled that he was willing to wait for two years to make Sandakozhi after his debut. He said, “He watched my debut film and liked it, but Lingusamy was still not sure about casting me in Sandakozhi. He was taking his time to make the decision. At my house, everyone was asking me why I wasn’t committing to any film after my successful debut, so I told them I was willing to wait even two years for this script. I told them this film (Sandakozhi) would do me the good of ten films, if everything works out. That’s when Lingusamy finally agreed. From that point onward, my career has only moved forward.”

The project, which was originally to be directed by Ravi Arasu, was taken over by Vishal midway due to creative differences. Magudam also features Dushara Vijayan and Anjali in pivotal roles.
