Sandhya Mridul: I have always fancied myself being a good mom
After seven years, Sandhya Mridul returns to television with Private Investigator

Actor Sandhya Mridul likes to keep it unconventional. In Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.(2007) she stepped into the role of a wife stuck in a marriage to a gay man; in Page 3 (2005), she played an air hostess whose sole aim in life is to get married to a rich man and in Via Darjeeling (2008) she was an alcoholic. “I’m a restless soul and a greedy actor, who gets bored easily and I cannot keep doing stereotypical roles,” she says.
Mridul’s latest is Private Investigator on Star Plus that revolves around the life of a college-going student Raffe Roy Chaudhary who is a detective. “I play Anita, the mother of the protagonist. She is possibly the coolest, amicable mother and more like a friend, who keeps asking if he has any girlfriend. She can talk to him about everything, except when he asks about his father. She has a past and it is very crucial to the story that ends up changing Raffe’s life,” she says. “I am not a mother in real life but I have always fancied myself being a good mom. This is giving me enough practice before I make the mistake.” The show debuts on December 7.
The 39-year-old actor, who made her television debut with Banegi Apni Baat in 1994 and was last seen as a runner up in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2 in 2007, says that repetitive roles was the reason that kept her away from TV. Mridul appeared in Ekta Kapoor’s hugely popular TV series Koshish, playing the role of a woman trapped into marrying a mentally challenged man. “After Koshish, everyone started offering me similar roles. I didn’t want to do it. Many say that I walked away from television but I never did. I love it because it is the most powerful medium that reaches out to a large audience. I just didn’t like what the medium was doing; it was running only success stories.”
The actor says that she is open to playing all kinds of diverse role. “I was recently offered the role of a eunuch, when I realised I would be more than happy to do it. Looking pretty on television never excited me,” she says.
