Months after his death sentence was overturned, rapper Toomaj Salehi has been released from prison. Salehi was incarcerated in October 2022 after he showed his support for protests that were held due to the mysterious death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody.

The 33-year-old is known for his anti-establishment style of writing and has been constantly vocal against the Iranian government. He was released on bail in 2023, but after releasing a video exposing the treatment he endured during his term in prison, he was detained again.

The rapper took to his Instagram and informed his followers about his release.

Earlier this year, Salehi was sentenced to death by a court in Isfahan on the charges of “spreading corruption on earth.” This decision was then later overturned by the Iranian Supreme Court in June. Many had risen against the Salehi’s incarceration, like journalist Kianoosh Sanjari and activist Hossein Ronaghi.

Sanjari had threatened the government that he would take his own life unless the falsely convicted prisoners were released, including Salehi. The journalist then proceeded to take his own life, after which Hossein Ronaghi sewed his lips shut and went on a hunger strike with the same demands.

Salehi has finally been released after serving more than 700 days behind bars. Salehi was also accused of “posting false statements on the internet and disrupting public order.”
