November is not a particularly important month for Hollywood movies. Major studios release only their second-tier movies that are not big enough for the Christmas season.

Three Hollywood movies released this week in India. You can catch them at theaters in your city.

Terminator: Dark Fate

Dark Fate is the direct sequel to 1984’s The Terminator and 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and ignores all the movies in between, much like last year’s Halloween sequel did. It also has the franchise creator James Cameron’s blessing and the filmmaker has co-produced it. Deadpool helmer Tim Miller directs and Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger return to reprise their old roles. Also in the cast are Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna and Diego Boneta playing new characters.

The Indian Express film critic Shalini Langer gave the film Terminator: Dark Fate 2 stars. She wrote, “The film is essentially one long battle against Rev-9, who can’t be cut, burnt, sliced, shot, blasted, or drowned, to death; can duplicate itself; and still re-assemble itself (this time, as molten tar). There are chases on road, rail and in the sky, and in true Terminator spirit, Rev-9 keeps coming back, back, and back. Director Tim Miller, fresh off Deadpool’s success, has trouble reeling it in.”

The Current War

Initially meant to be released in 2017, this Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon starrer was shelved after sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein, whose The Weinstein Company was going to distribute it. The film is about the so-called “war of the currents” between Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Shannon). While Edison was in favour of the Direct Current (DC), Westinghouse wanted Alternating Current (AC) to become the dominant electrical system.

An Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directorial, The Current War also stars Tom Holland, Katherine Waterston, Tuppence Middleton and Matthew Macfadyen.

Shalini gave the film 3.5 stars. She wrote, “Director Gomez-Rejon, whose work includes assistant-ships with names such as Martin Scorsese and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, mounts a stately and rich period film as well as some breathtaking montages of light and dark. But what the film lacks, for large lengths of time, is that crackle of electricity. It’s hard to put one’s finger on the exact missing spark, but it could be the single-minded focus on the two men, to the exclusion of what their tussle meant for a world they are about to change. It’s also difficult not to feel chuffed about how the film treats Mrs Edison and Mrs Westinghouse, who are present as constant, uncomplaining backdrops.”

The Addams Family

An animated comedy horror film, The Addams Family adapts the famous comics of the same name by Charles Addams in 1938. It is about the odd eponymous family who are quite macabre and weird and are wholly unaware of it. The Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan directorial features voices of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler and Allison Janney.

The Addams Family was given 3.5 stars by Shalini. She wrote, “A successful franchise, a bright idea, a great cast. There is little reason for the latest The Addams Family to go wrong. And yet, it does — losing its way, ironically, chasing the outrageous when most ghosts are now to be found in the ordinary.”
