Looking for Love

After a great 2011,Tusshar Kapoor now wants to play a romantic hero.

Dressed in a sparkling white skivi, skinny white pants and white leather shoes to match, this was a retro avatar Tusshar Kapoor just couldn’t refuse. “I am my father’s son,it’s in my genes,in my body language and his moves come naturally to me,” says this Kapoor, who simply loved the ‘jumping jack’ routine in his upcoming flick ‘Chaar Din Ki Chandni’,which releases on March 9.

A splitting image of his father,Kapoor shook a ‘Jeetu’ leg to the old hit ‘Chandni’ (from the film Chandni),against a psychedelic backdrop of matkis, with co-star Kulraj Randhawa. “The director,Samir Karnik, made the Deols dance to Dharamendra’s signature style in ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ and it was a hit. So when he asked me,I was game for the experiment,as it had already worked.” But Kapoor is quick to add that his pants weren’t as tight as his father’s. “They were more contemporary in style and a bit loose. I wish I’d worn tighter ones,” he states.

A rom-com,’Chaar Din Ki Chandni’ has Kapoor in the lead as a Rajput royal,Veer. He is in love with a commoner,a spunky Punjaban,Chandni (Randhawa),who knows and speaks her mind. “I have no guts to tell my extremely strict father about it,so I cook up stories and spin a yarn to prepare him for the news,” says Kapoor, who signed the film for three reasons — an entertaining script,a solid director and a starry cast. “All this matters. Take Karnik,he has delivered successful films and knows his job. The cast is amazing,it includes Anupam Kher,Sushant Singh,Chandrachur Singh,Mukul Dev and Farida Jalal.” Speaking about her character,Randhawa adds,“She loves to take charge of things.”

The film is a dream come true for Kapoor. While last year was excellent with regard to commercial and critical success — ‘The Dirty Picture’ and ‘Shor in the City’ — the 35-year-old says he is the kind of actor who always wants more. “I want a conventional solo hero hit, like ‘Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai’,” says he.

As he completes ten years in the industry,Kapoor rewinds and runs the reel — every film has been a milestone, from playing the good cop in Khakee to a middle-class loser Vishnu Prasad in ‘Gayab’,a mafioso in ‘Shootout in Lokhandwala’,an award-winning comedian in ‘Golmaal’ and a hopeless romantic in others. This year, the actor will be seen in Sanjay Gupta’s ‘Shootout at Wadala’,a prequel to ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’. While ‘Golmaal 4’ will begin in 2013,Kapoor will flaunt a six-pack in Sachin Yardi’s ‘Kya Super Cool Hain Hum’. Work with sister Ekta Kapoor, however,is undecided. “We operate independently. While I wish to get into production — I handled Shor… most of the time — acting remains my first love.”

In the meantime,Kapoor and Randhawa also acted as mediators between three warring friends on UTV Stars’s ‘Super Santa’,that aired on February 19. “I am usually not the agony aunt, but I try to help, for I believe in second chances,” says he. According to the actor, people don’t believe in making an effort. “Investing in a relationship and working on it is not a waste of time. The lines of communication should always remain open, may be the other person cares,” says Kapoor.
