The Waking of a Nation teaser: Ram Madhvani set to explore the Jallianwala Bagh ‘conspiracy’ in new show

The show titled The Waking of a Nation stars Mismatched actor Taaruk Raina in the lead role. The Sony LIV show will stream on March 7.

After Freedom At Midnight, Sony Liv is all set to explore yet another chapter from the history, this time the story of Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The show titled The Waking of a Nation, is directed by the National-award and International Emmy nominated filmmaker Ram Madhvani. On Monday, the makers of the show shared the teaser of the show, sharing the historical drama will premiere on March 7.

The show, set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh, stars Mismatched actor Taaruk Raina as the lawyer Kantilal Sahni, who is thrust into a web of colonial deceit.

The teaser starts with a glimpse of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, cutting to a court scene where Taaruk Raina as Kantilal grapples with racism, erasure, and the fight for truth, calling the episode a “British conspiracy”. Kantilal along with his childhood companions unravels the conspiracy.

Speaking about the show, the actor said, “I have always been deeply interested in colonialism and, by extension, the issues of racism and prejudice. Questions surrounding cultural, linguistic, social, and artistic colonization have long troubled me. As I was contemplating my next project, I knew it had to be rooted in our past, in the British Raj, and in our freedom struggle. That’s when the idea for The Waking of a Nation came to life.”

The show will combine a courtroom drama with the powerful story of three friends and how India became India.

The show is created, directed and produced by Ram Madhvani under his banner Ram Madhvani Films banner. Apart from Taaruk Raina, the show also stars, Nikita Dutta, Sahil Mehta, Bhawsheel Singh, Alex Reece, and Paul McEwan, among others.

The show is written by Shantanu Srivastava, Shatrujeet Nath and Ram Madhvani.
