Bigg Boss 19 runner up Farrhana Bhatt defends her remark about TV industry: ‘I was not respected’
In an exclusive interview, Bigg Boss 19 first runner-up Farhana Bhatt spoke about Gaurav Khanna, saying she felt the Anupamaa actor was 'playing a character' until his very last moment on the show.
Actress Farrhana Bhatt emerged as the first runner-up of Bigg Boss 19, losing the trophy to actor Gaurav Khanna. While Farhana and Gaurav were largely amicable on the show, they did have a few clashes. One of the season’s biggest fights erupted when Farhana questioned Gaurav’s stardom. An angry Gaurav then challenged her, saying he would win the show and prove the power of television. Now, in an exclusive interview with SCREEN shortly after the grand finale, Farhana explained why she made that comment about TV and stood by her remarks about Gaurav.
Talking about her journey on Bigg Boss 19, Farrhana Bhatt said, “My biggest purpose has been fulfilled by being on the show. I never played the game with the idea of pleasing people. I was just being myself, whether it was liked or not is secondary. When I was villainized, I thought maybe people were not liking me, so I had to make those decisions for myself. I am not someone who gets lost in the crowd; I believe in standing out. I was on cloud nine when I saw that my followers had increased.”
While Farrhana Bhatt came across as quite a strong contestant on Bigg Boss Season 19, her personality seemed to intimidate many. Discussing how many cannot handle a strong-headed woman, Farrhana said, “The majority of people cannot accept a strong-headed woman. Usually, a girl is expected to just agree to what is being told, keep your plans or decisions above all, and ask for permission for every little thing. Those who don’t succumb are opposed. Like I was evicted from the show on the very first day, strong women like me face such things.”
She added, “My eviction on the first day was a mystery to me until the journey video was shown. I was trying to be so good to everyone, but it was my sort of good; their good was different. However, right on the first day, people had started talking behind my back.”
On her comments about television and Gaurav Khanna
Farrhana Bhatt lost the Bigg Boss 19 trophy to Gaurav Khanna. Talking about his Gaurav’s victory, she said, “I was very nervous in that moment, but I was also somewhat hopeful that my name would be announced. However, I was mentally prepared. For me, getting love from the audience is bigger than getting the trophy. It was a 50-50 feeling, but I am happy for Gaurav Khanna.”
She also defended her remark about television, explaining that she had a bad experience with the medium. “I have no issues with television. I was on TV, and I couldn’t explain to everyone who questioned me, so I avoided speaking up. I thought people would gauge it, but it got perceived in another way. My very first experience on TV wasn’t very great. I was not respected the way I wanted to. I wasn’t expecting princess treatment, but I was not respected as an artiste. That first impression was the last.”
“That comment was specifically for Gaurav Khanna. I still believe he was playing a character throughout the season, so I told him that he was thinking he was the star of TV, but needed to look at himself. You show very high morals and principles on the weekend episode, but when you see that someone is being treated badly, and because you are not friends with that person, you won’t stand up for that person, then your principles are shown. So don’t wear the garb of being a superstar with high morals. When you get the tag of a star, it comes with responsibility, so when you show that you are deserving, but I can clearly see you are not, I intended to call him out and not to attack TV as a medium,” Farrhana added.

On being judged and misunderstood
Farhana Bhatt also spoke about feeling judged at every step in her life and said she often felt misunderstood on the show. Farrhana shared, “I don’t care if I am misunderstood. It has happened to me a lot of times that people have not understood my choices, and it will keep happening again and again, so I don’t pay much attention, because if I get stuck there, when will I think of the future? My focus in life is very sharp; no matter how many things come and go, it doesn’t affect me.”
She then opened up about the two moments, in real life and on the show, that changed everything for her. “A life-changing moment for me in real life was when my grandfather passed away. He was a support system for me, and when he was gone, I had to face a storm in my life. Inside the house, my life-changing moment was when I learnt about my followers growing. Till then, I thought the audience did not like me, and what I was being told was actually true. It had started mentally affecting me.”
