Rape accused tries to flee custody, shot in leg: Police

A man accused of raping a woman with intellectual disabilities was injured on Monday after suffering a gunshot wound to the leg during a a bid to escape, officers of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police said.

According to DCP (Crime) Ajit Rajian, the incident took place when the accused, identified only as Moinuddin, allegedly tried to escape the custody of crime branch personnel during a reconstruction of the crime scene.

Moinuddin had been in six days’ police remand at the time of the incident.

A statement by DCP Rajian on Monday afternoon said, “The accused was injured after assaulting police and attempting to escape custody during a reconstruction of the rape offense. The incident occurred between 12:15 pm and 12:30 pm today, while the Crime Branch team was conducting the reconstruction.”

Regarding the scuffle, the statement said, “Moinuddin allegedly attempted to assault the police team and seize a weapon from Police Inspector Imran Ghasura at the reconstruction site. During the scuffle, a round was fired, which struck the accused in the leg. Additionally, Head Constable Bharat Rathod sustained injuries during the confrontation.”

Moinuddin was arrested earlier this year in connection with an alleged rape.

Police said he has a criminal record, with over 16 offences registered against him. He has previously been detained under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) twice and has also faced externment proceedings.
