The Sikh clergy Monday pronounced religious sentences (tankhah) against four prominent figures, including former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice Chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh.

Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj announced the decision after a meeting at Akal Takht in Amritsar, the temporal seat of Sikhism.

Former Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh appeared before the clergy to apologise for the controversial 2015 pardon granted to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. The Takht held him guilty of wrongly granting the pardon, which was revoked after 23 days, under the political influence of Sukhbir Singh Badal. He has been directed to perform religious penance for this misconduct.

The Acting Jathedar also pronounced a sentence for GNDU V-C D Karamjit Singh, directing him to perform volunteer service washing utensils at the Darbar Sahib community kitchen. Furthermore, he has been ordered to distribute 500 copies of a book.

This decision stems from a controversy in July regarding Dr Singh’s participation in an RSS-linked event in Mysuru. During the event, he reportedly briefed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on university initiatives, including a PhD course on ‘Bharatiya Parampara’ and a study linking the Rigveda with Guru Nanak Dev’s teachings. The Akal Takht secretariat previously summoned him for expressing views deemed contrary to Gurmat philosophy.

In a parallel development, the clergy granted relief to veteran politician Virsa Singh Valtoha. Valtoha, who appeared before the Takht and tendered an unconditional apology, has been permitted to rejoin the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He was also directed to perform religious voluntary service as penance.

Valtoha was expelled from the SAD for 10 years in October 2024, under orders from the Akal Takht. At the time, he was found guilty of “unethical conduct”, which included secretly recording a meeting with Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh and alleging that the clergy was under RSS/BJP pressure regarding decisions on Sukhbir Singh Badal. His return marks the end of a year-long standoff with the religious temporal seat.

Additionally, Jaswant Jaffar, Director of the State Language Department, appeared before the Takht. He was also given a sentence that includes performing community service and reading a book.
