Actor Sheeba Chaddha admitted that Salman Khan was temperamental on the set of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, as she narrated anecdotes about his behaviour while making the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

Actor Sheeba Chaddha, whose first-ever film role came in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, recalled her experiences on set. She admitted that Salman Khan was a temperamental person to be around. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Sheeba recalled an incident where Salman became furious on set, stormed off, and accidentally hit an elderly crew member. The shooting came to an abrupt halt, she said, as Bhansali intervened and had a conversation with the actor. Sheeba also recalled an incident where Salman refused to hug her as he was supposed to in a scene. Once again, Bhansali had to have a word with him.

Asked if the reports about Bhansali’s famous anger are true, Sheeba said, “I think this reputation came much later, but back then, I didn’t really see him behave in an objectionable manner. You could, of course, tell that he was a very passionate director. He certainly had the air of someone working on a very big first film, with very big stars. But I don’t remember him ever losing it. I didn’t feel intimidated by him. But Salman, yes; he’s quite… temperamental.”

Asked what makes her say this, Sheeba made a sound, as if to suggest that the interviewer doesn’t know the half of it. “I remember a few incidents. This was long back. So, something happened that made Salman trip. It was a track or something. Either Salman tripped or fell, or something happened, and I remember him storming out of the set. He just stormed out of the set… He slammed the door, and there was a poor old lightman who got hit I think. But yes, he stormed off. I remember thinking, ‘Baap re, is this how stars behave?'”

Sheeba said that it was certainly an eye-opening moment, but mentioned that Salman was ‘otherwise quite nice’. As someone from a theatre background, Sheeba said that she didn’t exactly hold the film industry in high regard. Asked if witnessing Salman’s outburst changed her behaviour towards him on set, or if it impacted her performance, Sheeba said, “I can tell you that it didn’t affect my performance at all; I had to do my job with complete sincerity and honesty. I can’t be thinking about my co-actor; if I do, I will not be present in that moment.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam launched Bhansali’s career; Salman and Aishwarya were said to be in a relationship at the time. More recently, the filmmaker and actor announced a new project together, but they went their separate ways before it could get off the ground. Bhansali is currently working on Love & War, his period romance film starring Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, and Ranbir Kapoor. Salman was last seen in the film Sikandarthat failed to do well at the box office.
