When Mahesh Bhatt said that his kids from first wife resented Soni Razdan: ‘She was the evil seductress who took their papa away’

Mahesh was already married to Kiran Bhatt, his first wife, when he fell in love with Soni but the couple was so desperately in love with each other that they simply couldn’t stay away. Mahesh and Soni first met when he was making the 1984 film Saaransh with Anupam Kher where Soni played a significant role.

In a chat with Simi Garewal, Mahesh said that Soni “coped with my most difficult phase when my drinking had become almost like a disease and to be able to cope with that phase of mine when I turned everything I touched into a wasteland must have been quite traumatic.”

Mahesh and Soni’s daughter Alia Bhatt, in an earlier chat with Asian Age, has spoken about her father and mother falling in love when Mahesh was already married to someone else. “My father met my mother because he had an extramarital affair. I am not as black and white about life; sometimes in life, things happen for a reason. Of course, you would not want to propagate infidelity and I don’t propagate it, but I understand the nature of human — it’s not always that easy and it is something that’s prevalent,” she said.

In the chat with Simi, Soni was asked if there was any kind of insecurity with Mahesh’s first family when she first got married to him. Soni said, “For a while, maybe, but that went (away) over the years. You realise that nobody is a threat to anybody and nobody wants to be a threat to anybody else.” And Mahesh added that he “did nothing to make her overcome anything.”

Soni also spoke being a step-mother to Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt and said that it won’t be “fair” to call herself a step-mother and said that the kids have “never needed” her as they have a “wonderful mother.” When asked about if there was any kind of resentment that his kids held against Soni, Mahesh said, “Yes, there was. She was the evil seductress who took their Papa away.”

But, in an earlier interaction with India Today, Pooja had a different side to the story. “I grew up with a father who supposedly went on to marry somebody else and have another family. I do not feel that way. In fact I was very moved one day. Soni and I were on a recce to Conoor and she was sitting outside and she said, ‘Pooja I want to tell you I felt so guilty’ and I said, ‘Soni why do you need to feel guilty? You never broke any marriage up.’ That marriage was long dead.”

While talking to Simi, Soni revealed that Kiran and her had their fights in the initial days. “Initially, when we weren’t married, there were problems but once I got married to him, we’ve been very good to each other,” she said.

Mahesh and Soni are the proud parents of Shaheen Bhatt and Alia Bhatt.
