Actor Gaurav Khanna won the Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss 19 on Sunday. He took home the trophy along with Rs 50 lakhs as prize money. After his victory, Gaurav spoke to SCREEN at length about his journey on the show, the superstar tag, and his Celebrity Masterchef win. Gaurav also revealed that he is collaborating with Rajan Shahi once again and spoke about Salman Khan offering him work.

Talking about his victory on Bigg Boss 19, Gaurav Khanna said, “I feel very humbled by all the love showered upon me. Playing the game with grace and dignity wasn’t a plan; that is how I am in real life. I have been brought up in a certain manner. Things which I don’t like to do in front of my parents, in my house, or in front of my wife, I would definitely not want to do it in front of others. My folks are watching, my wife is watching, and even kids and elderly people watch Bigg Boss, so I didn’t want to do anything that I don’t do in real life.”

He added, “With a show like Bigg Boss, people always misunderstand and come with a pre-conceived notion that you have to do a certain thing, behave in a certain manner, talk in a particular accent, wear particular clothes. No, it doesn’t work like that. It’s a mind game, a personality show where you have to be real. Anyone with a stable, strong mind who doesn’t get triggered can be a winner.”

On his TV stardom

Gaurav Khanna spoke about being the superstar of TV and if he ever felt the weight of it. He shared, “I never felt the weight of my popularity; it’s the love. How you carry the baggage is what matters. I am very happy with the so-called baggage, and I am very happy with all the love that has come my way. I am very proud that people in the industry have also been so loving towards me. It’s a very ruthless industry; it’s very tough and on the go. Today, it’s there, tomorrow you are not there, but I am very happy that people stand by me. There must be something they like in me.”

On his equation with Amaal Mallik

On Bigg Boss 19, Gaurav and Amaal shared a bittersweet equation. Talking about the same, the Anupamaa actor said, “Amaal is a very talented guy. I respect him because I always respect talent. But it’s Bigg Boss, people will play the game the way they want to play. I am a different player; I will speak on the face. Today, when he was evicted, he hugged me and called me the winner. Amaal is a good guy. When you are a part of a group, things do come out. I feel he doesn’t mean it. I love him.”

On backlash over refusing cooking duties on Bigg Boss 19

In the early days of Bigg Boss 19, Gaurav Khanna flatly refused to take on kitchen duties. His statement that he will not cook sparked serious backlash on social media, especially since he had previously won Celebrity MasterChef. Reacting to it, Gaurav  said, “I always enter a show with an understanding of what I have to do in it. When I entered MasterChef, I was not a trained cook. I learnt. I stumbled upon things, my food was thrown up or spit out, but then I worked my way hard every episode and reached a level. When I entered Bigg Boss, I understood that it wasn’t a cooking show. Secondly, all the politics happened in the kitchen since day one. I understood this. I am not a stupid man; I didn’t want to be a part of something that is not fruitful for my journey on the show.”

“I didn’t want to be a part of things created out of the blue. We fought over food items. All these were lying in the house after seven weeks, and nobody was even looking at them because people who wanted to create the ruckus were out of the show. I purposely didn’t want to enter the kitchen at that moment. I entered from the 6th or 7th week, and I never left. I played the game when I wanted to, the way I wanted to. If people couldn’t understand it, then they can just watch me on the TV sets at home,” Gaurav added.

On his wish to have a child blowing out of proportion

On the show, Gaurav Khanna opened up several times about his wish to have a child. When he said his wife wasn’t on the same page to start a family, Gaurav was accused of playing the victim card. Defending the same, he said, “No, my and Akanksha’s equation wouldn’t get affected because all my close buddies know about it, both sides’ families know about it, and we have been married for 9 years now. If I wanted to do something, I would have done it earlier. We have a relationship with that level of understanding and maturity that we are very open about our choices. I am a very proud husband, and if my wife doesn’t want kids, of course, I feel bad as an individual. As a husband, it is my duty to put my wife before me. With this, if 10 husbands can change and be like me, the world will be a better place.”

On working with Salman Khan and Rajan Shahi

Lastly, Gaurav revealed that he will be collaborating with Rajan Shahi once again. He said, “Rajan sir has played a pivotal role in getting me the character of Anuj. The show changed everything in my life. I am full of gratitude towards that man. He is a visionary and a storyteller. Rajan sir has promised me to do something with me on a different platform. I will not say when, but sir, let’s do it fast. I am free now, let’s do something new. Even Salman Sir has offered me a film now, so Rajan Sir, what are you waiting for?”

On a parting note, Gaurav shared, “A lot of people who never knew me would now know me the way I am in real life. Before this show, they always wanted me to be on social media, do things. Now I want to be on social media, I want to do things, and I will connect with fans even more.”
