Kapil Sharma reveals having suicidal thoughts while dealing with depression: ‘I thought there is nobody I can share my feelings with’
Kapil Sharma recently revisited the time when he battled depression. He also shared how he emerged out of that phase, stronger than before.

Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma is awaiting the release of his next film, Zwigato. His last big screen outing was Firangi, which released in 2017 and tanked at the box office. After the film’s failure, the comedian underwent a difficult phase in life as he battled depression and anxiety. Recently, Kapil revisited that period, and shared how he emerged from it, stronger than before.
While promoting Zwigato on Aaj Tak’s Seedhi Baat, Kapil shared how lonely one can be despite being loved by so many. He said in Hindi, “As a public figure, crores of people know you, you entertain them, but when you come home, you are alone. You are also not in a situation to live a normal life where you can go out, sit on the beach and look at the sea. You live in a two-room flat, and when it’s dark outside by evening, I cannot explain how bad the feeling is in that situation.”
Kapil eventually emerged from that phase, and now, he believes that “nothing is permanent, neither happiness nor sadness.” But he remembers thinking about ending his life after his film failed and he courted controversy due to his fall-out with fellow comedian Sunil Grover. “In that phase, I thought about committing suicide. I thought there is nobody with whom I can share what I feel. The place where I come from, mental health is not something that is discussed. I don’t think this was the first time that I went through this phase. Maybe, during childhood, I must have felt low, but nobody would have noticed,” said Kapil.
However, once he recovered, Kapil thought of it as a learning experience. The actor shared, “Once you go out to earn money, and you are single, there’s nobody to take care of you, to make you understand things, you do not get to know if people around you have ulterior motives, especially if you are an artist. But after you go through such a phase, you start to take notice of things going around you. Your eyes open up. If an artist is sensitive, it doesn’t mean that he is stupid.”
He added, “Now that I think about it, I think it was a good phase, only because life got filtered after that. If that phase didn’t come, I would not have learnt to enjoy small things in life.”
Nandita Das’ Zwigato, also starring Shahana Goswami, will hit the theaters on March 17.
