Actors Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimpri’s Laila Majnu may have been a box office disaster upon its initial release six years ago, but it has since gained a dedicated following thanks to streaming platforms and viral Instagram reels over the past few years. Since the 2018 romantic drama, directed by Sajid Ali based on classic folklore, had a heartfelt narrative, the movie found its audience among the Gen Zs through social media much like Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha. The film has developed a strong fan base on streaming platforms, achieving cult-classic status over time. Buoyed by this resurgence, Laila Majnu, co-written by Imtiaz, returned to theatres in August 2024, beginning with a single screen in Kashmir. The enthusiastic local response led to a nationwide re-release, with the makers collaborating with major multiplex chains across the country.

The re-release kicked off with a strong Rs 30 lakh on its first day (August 9), followed by an impressive 110 per cent increase on the second day, bringing the two-day total to Rs 1 crore, according to Pinkvilla. The opening weekend collection for the re-release is anticipated to reach around Rs 2 crore, the report added. Initially, in 2018, the film had ended its run with an India nett collection of just Rs 2.72 crore and a worldwide total of Rs 3.40 crore, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk.

Meanwhile, Avinash took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to share his excitement over the performance of Laila Majnu’s re-released version. “Thank you for all the love… I have always believed there is a huge segment of audience that doesn’t raise its voice… but Jo nahi bolte,Woh jab Bolte hain toh Kya Kamaal Bolte hain! Thank you to the audience…This is your victory…I know it was personal for you,” he wrote. Laila Majnu may be the first Hindi film to surpass its original box office collection during a re-release.

The film’s initial failure in 2018 had left both the actors deeply saddened. However, the re-release and audience appreciation have brought a sense of vindication. Avinash shared how the film never truly left people’s minds and now they’ve brought it back to the big screen. “This is an incredible feeling,” Avinash said at the press conference where it was announced that the film will re-release across 75 screens in the country. “On the third day when I had gone to watch the film with my parents, the posters were being pulled down. Now, the film is still running houseful in Srinagar. This is a great feeling.”

The actor shared that despite it being six years, the cast never could “move on” from the film as Laila Majnu always found a mention in conversations with people. “The film would keep coming up in conversations to a point that it started irritating me, that enough it has been six years now! ‘Tab kyu nahi dekhne aaye the? (Why didn’t you come to watch it back then?)’ that was my feeling when they’d share love. But now, the people have brought it back,” he added.

Laila Majnu’s initial release in 2018 lacked the promotional push and star power needed for mainstream success. However, the film’s emotional core resonated with viewers on streaming platforms, leading to its newfound popularity. The re-release decision was fueled by the film’s growing online fanbase. Imtiaz announced the news on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the love that brought Laila Majnu back to theatres. “Laila Majnu back on popular demand!!! gratitude to your love that pulled it into theaters again after six years!! re-releasing 9th Aug ‘24 in cinemas nationwide,” the filmmaker wrote announcing the news. Notably, the film, which was majorly shot in Jammu and Kashmir, was re-released in Srinagar just a week earlier on August 2. Imtiaz’s Rockstar and Jab We Met were also released in theatres earlier this year.
