Mohanlal and Suchitra’s wedding almost didn’t happen, but things changed 2 years later: ‘Used to send five cards a day’
In a way, one can say that Mohanlal and Suchitra were actually destined to end up together, particularly since the two had almost backed out from pursuing the proposal.

Remember Malayalam megastar Mammootty’s iconic dialogue at the end of director Priyadarshan’s Megham (1999)? “For people like us, there’s someone out there waiting because they’re destined to be our life partner. Just think about it… One Sonia waited in Italy to become the bride of an India-born Rajiv Gandhi. A Usha waited in Burma to become the bride of President KR Narayanan, who was born in Kerala. Similarly, to become our Mohanlal’s bride, a Suchitra waited in Madras. In the same way, someone is waiting for you and me as well. We’ll meet them one day, I’m sure,” Colonel RV Thampuran (Mammootty) tells Shanmugham (Sreenivasan). Though cheesy in retrospect, Mammootty wasn’t wrong with facts here, and this line prompted many millennials to believe in destiny.
In a way, one can say that Mohanlal and Suchitra were actually destined to end up together, particularly since the two had almost backed out from pursuing the proposal, as their horoscopes apparently did not match. However, things took a dramatic turn later, and they eventually tied the knot. What makes their story even more intriguing is that Suchitra was once an out-and-out Mohanlal fan and used to obsessively write him cards daily. Despite not liking him initially upon watching his first major release, director Fazil’s Manjil Virinja Pookkal, in which he played a negative role, Suchitra eventually fell head over heels for the actor.
Mohanlal, too, once acknowledged this and revealed how they ended up together, even though their marriage almost didn’t happen. “She wanted to marry me. She used to mail me cards,” he said during a 2004 conversation with Reader’s Digest. The superstar added, “A proposal finally came through her aunt. However, our horoscopes did not match. But two years later, we learnt the astrologer had erred, and that the horoscopes matched after all. By then, I was also sending her cards.”
When asked if the horoscope’s sudden change was part of the lovebirds’ scheme, Mohanlal said, “Neither of us had it changed. During those two years, Suchitra was going to temples and churches, praying that the wedding would take place. To me, Suchitra’s been everything — mother to my children, sweetheart, assistant, the sister I never had, the one who looks after and feeds me.”

Speaking about her pre-marriage obsession with Mohanlal and how she stalked the actor back then, Suchitra told Rekha Menon on her YouTube channel, “Instead of studying, I used to spend a lot of time gossiping about movies and Mohanlal. I used to send at least five cards a day. I used to go to theatres in Calicut and watch all his movies.” Suchitra also admitted that she, however, didn’t like him when she first saw him on screen in Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980). “I’ve seen all his movies. I watched Manjil Virinja Pookkal and at that time, I did not like him at all. But that proves how good an actor he is.”

The daughter of renowned producer-actor K Balaji, Suchitra, tied the knot with Mohanlal, who had by then become a superstar in Malayalam cinema, in 1988. Her brother Suresh Balaje is also a prominent film producer. Mohanlal and Suchitra have two children together: Pranav and Visamaya. While Pranav Mohanlal is already an established actor in Malayalam cinema, Visamaya is currently gearing up for her film debut.
