18 years of Sarkar: When Amitabh Bachchan expressed shock over the inclusion of Govinda Govinda track
Ram Gopal Varma's 2005 film Sarkar featured Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon, Katrina Kaif, Tanisha Mukherjee, Supriya Pathak, Kota Srinivasa Rao, and Anupam Kher.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar was said to be loosely based on the cult Hollywood film The Godfather. Actor Amitabh Bachchan played the lead role in Sarkar, and carried the movie on his shoulders. While he seemed to be in sync with Varma’s vision for the movie, it was the film’s theme song “Govinda Govinda” which confused the megastar. He even asked the director about the relevance of the track in a crime drama.
In the podcast Love Of Cinema by Himanshu Joglekar, RGV revealed that Amitabh questioned why there is a mention of Govinda, another name for Lord Krishna, in the theme song.
Ram Gopal Varma said, “I’ll tell you something very funny about (the film). When I first made Mr Bachchan listen to the ‘Govinda Govinda’ theme in Sarkar, he looked at me as if I’d lost my mind. He asked, ‘In our film, where did Govinda come from and he didn’t understand what that line meant.”
The filmmaker added, “I said, ‘Sarkar is a Govinda or Sri Krishna kind of a character. He has all the tricks up his sleeve and doesn’t let people know what he’s thinking and I thought it was the right representation for the soundtrack of your character.’ Some nonsense I told him! In reality, it’s a track I used in a Telugu film of mine called Govinda Govinda (1994), starring Nagarjuna and Sridevi. I loved the score so much that I was looking for an opportunity to use it once again. That’s the only reason I put it (in Sarkar).”
Sarkar also starred Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon, Katrina Kaif, Tanisha Mukherjee, Supriya Pathak, Kota Srinivasa Rao, and Anupam Kher.
