Ajit Pawar-led NCP dominates civic polls in Pune district: What it means for him & NCP

Splitting the NCP, Ajit Pawar parted ways with his uncle Sharad Pawar and took over the reins of NCP. However, it has been challenged by Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) in the Supreme Court and awaits a decision for long.

The first phase of civic polls are over with results announced. Elections to municipal councils had not attracted much importance in the past as now due to changed political equations. Pune district saw Ajit Pawar-led NCP dominating in 10 of the 17 municipal councils, which is significant as far as politics in Pune district is concerned.

Leadership of Ajit Pawar still prominent in Pune district

Splitting the NCP, Ajit Pawar parted ways with his uncle Sharad Pawar and took over the reins of NCP. However, it has been challenged by Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) in the Supreme Court and awaits a decision for long. The battle between uncle and nephew began in Lok Sabha elections which was won by the party led by veteran leader Sharad Pawar. The NCP (SP) defeated NCP in both the Lok Sabha seats it fought in Pune in 2024. NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule defeated her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar, wife of Ajit Pawar, of NCP in Baramati seat indicating that the voters stood by Sharad Pawar after the split. In the Shirur Lok Sabha seat, NCP (SP) candidate Amol Kolhe defeated Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil of NCP.

However, things changed in the Assembly elections held months after. Contesting in alliance with Mahayuti, the NCP won eight seats while the BJP dominated by winning nine seats of the total 21 seats. On the other hand the NCP (SP) won only one seat.

The municipal council elections have proved that NCP-led by Ajit Pawar has better hold on Pune district than the NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar and BJP which was rapidly expanding its hold on the Pawar bastion.

Sharad Pawar party on backfoot

The battle for oneupmanship in district politics within the NCP and NCP (SP) began soon after the split. The NCP (SP) initially struggled to keep party leaders and workers within the party. The Lok Sabha performance of NCP (SP) had led the party eye big in the Assembly elections but it could win only one seat in Pune. The NCP (SP) despite deciding to go all out in civic polls to strengthen its base failed to make any impact in the municipal council polls. The NCP (SP) now has gone on the backfoot with two successive poor performances in state assembly and municipal council elections.

Putting brake on BJP growth in Pune

The success of Ajit Pawar-led NCP in municipal council elections has put a brake on the growing strength of BJP in Pune district. In most of the places, it was a direct fight between BJP and NCP despite both in alliance at state and national level. Ajit Pwar-led NCP did not score better than BJP but snatched power from the saffron party in Lonavala Municipal Council and defeated the BJP in Bhor Municipal Council where the BJP was trying to make inroads through the strength of former Congress leader Sangram Thopte who had joined BJP few months ago.

Firm footing in Baramati

In battle of supremacy within the Pawar family, Ajit Pawar after winning the Assembly seat in 2024 following the setback in Lok Sabha polls now has a firm footing in Baramati turf by emerging the single largest party in Baramati Municipal Council elections by defeating NCP (SP)-led alliance, which was contesting under the guidance of Yugendra Pawar, nephew of Ajit Pawar. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP also gained control in neighbouring municipal council of Baramati, which include Malegaon Budhruk, Indapur, Jejuri, Daund, Phursungi Uruli Devachi and, Bhor.
