Delhi Confidential: Inclusive Code

M Venkaiah Naidu has another suggestion — he feels the term “common civil code” would be more inclusive.

With the idea of Uniform Civil Code integral to BJP’s ideological agenda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had advocated reframing it as “secular civil code”. But former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has another suggestion — he feels the term “common civil code” would be more inclusive. Naidu wants all stakeholders, including representatives of all religions, to be consulted for suggestions as “the largest parliamentary democracy in the world needs a common law for inheritance, marriage, divorce…”

Date Clash

Some members of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill have found themselves struggling to keep the meeting dates. The committee is meeting next on October 21 and 22. On October 21, there is also a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology, Environment, Forests and Climate Change. An Opposition member of the committee pointed out that Waqf committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal is also a member of the Science and Technology committee.

New Address

Union Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh has moved to a new bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi. His new address will be 9, Thyagraj Marg. The previous occupant of this bungalow was former Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey. Earlier, Lalan Singh used to live on Pandara Road during his stint as a member of the last Lok Sabha, when he was also the JD(U) president.
