Jana Nayagan Movie Release Date Postponed Live Updates: Vijay's final film not to release till January 21.The Madras High Court has temporarily stayed its earlier order, which directed the Central Board of Film Certification to issue a U/A certificate for Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan. After a single bench ruled in favour of the film on Friday morning, the Additional Solicitor General, representing the CBFC, made an urgent mention before the Chief Justice of the HC, seeking a hearing of the writ appeal against the earlier order.
During the hearing, the CJ remarked that the movie’s makers should have waited for the CBFC’s certificate before announcing the release date. After temporarily staying the single judge’s order, the court said the matter will now be heard on January 21 after the Pongal holidays. The film was previously scheduled for a worldwide release on January 9, but was postponed on January 7 after the makers were not granted a certificate by the CBFC.
Previously, the film was screened for an examining committee of five members on December 19. The committee recommended 27 cuts, following which, the film could be granted a U/A certificate. Later, one member from the examining committee wrote to the CBFC chairperson claiming that their objections had not been appropriately addressed. After this complaint, the chairperson referred the film to a revising committee.
Now that the court has ruled in favour of the makers, it is yet to be seen when the film will hit the theatres. The makers had previously claimed that the production house had invested close to Rs 500 crore in the film and were betting big on the Pongal weekend.
Jana Nayagan is being touted as Vijay’s last film as the actor is planning to enter politics with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). An audio launch for the film was held in Malaysia a few weeks ago. Directed by H Vinoth, the film also stars Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol.
X user @_balajihere opined, "BIG POLITICAL GAME #jananayagan. The film 'Jananaayagan' was made with the legislative assembly elections as its focus. All the political parties have ganged up to stall this film before the elections and thus cripple Vijay's political ambitions. They will try to drag out the 'Jananaayagan' film case until February. If the election date is announced, they will further postpone the film, citing the presence of political dialogues as the reason. Either he should join the alliance, or Vijay's political career must be thwarted; this is the plan of the BJP and AIADMK."
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma shared a long note on X which read, "CENSOR BOARD is OUTDATED. Not in the context of just @Actor_Vijay‘s #jananayagan ‘s censor issues but in an overall manner, it is truly foolish to think that the censor board is still relevant today. It has long outlived it’s purpose, but it’s being kept alive out of laziness to debate it’s relevance now , and it is the film industry as a whole which is mainly responsible for this. We live in a time where a 12-year old with a phone can watch a terrorist execution filmed on a GoPro, a 9-year-old can stumble upon hardcore porn, and a bored retiree can binge extremist propaganda, indulge in conspiracy theories , from anywhere in the world, uncut, uncensored, algorithmically pushed. All of it is available instantly, anonymously, and without a gatekeeper. At the same time, everybody in every wake of society speak in abusive language from new channels to YouTubers and from other apps ..If you quote that age old belief that cinema is a powerful medium , don’t ignore the fact that the social media has far more reach than cinema .and it is full of political venom, communal poison, character assassinations, live, uncensored shouting matches in the name of debates. And in this reality, for the honourable censor board to believe that cutting a word in a film, trimming a shot, or blurring a cigarette will 'protect society' is a Joke."
He continued, "The censor board was born in an era of scarcity when images were rare, access was limited, and the state controlled the media . Cinema halls were crowd points. Newspapers had editors. Television had schedules. Control made sense then. But today, any form of a control is impossible because no one can no longer decide what people should or should not see. In such times as now, censorship doesn’t prevent exposure… it only insults the viewers. We are supposed to have smartness to decide who should rule us but not what we want to see or hear??? What the censor board actually does now is not protection, but only theatrics . It’s a ritual of authority in Oscar worthy performances where scissors replace thinking, and moral pretence moves around in a disguise called responsibility. The same society that freely scrolls through graphic violence on social media suddenly becomes “concerned” when a filmmaker shows something in a theatre. This hypocrisy is dangerous."
The filmmaker further wrote, "Censorship assumes people are children forever as if they aren’t even aware what all things children have access to? Cinema is not meant to be a classroom where lessons are taught . They are mirrors , view points , expressions and opinions meant to entertain. The job of the authorities is not to edit or cut them out, but to trust citizens enough to decide for themselves ,which is the main point of freedom of speech and expression, guaranteed under the constitution. If the argument is think of the children or adults who are like children, it takes very less intelligence to understand that they cannot be protected by blunt scissors wielded by committees, whose own personal tastes pass off as public morality also not to forget their bias and agendas. Age classification makes sense. Warnings of the content makes sense. Censorship does not."
RGV concluded, "Continuing to defend the relevance of the censor board today is like insisting on a watchman for a building whose walls have already been broken and everyone can see what’s inside. The world has already moved on to so many platforms which are unfiltered and unsupervised and so the painful question is whether the authorities have the courage to admit that they are obsolete, and more than that, whether we as a film industry collectively have the will to question them on the same. So instead of raising this topic once in a while over a particular film , the fight should be with that particular system of thinking which created the censor board."

In a significant setback for director H Vinoth's 'Thalapathy' Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan, a division bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan, has issued a "temporary stay" against the order passed by a single bench earlier on Friday (January 9) morning, directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant a U/A certificate to the movie immediately. After the Madras High Court's order for U/A certification of actor Vijay's movie Jana Nayagan in Chennai, TVK-affiliated lawyers celebrated by distributing sweets. The fans were also seen celebrating with slogans that this is a victory for democracy.
Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated final film Jana Nayagan may hit theatres on January 14. On Friday, the film’s distributors hinted that the film may eye January 14 to release, days after its originally scheduled January 9 release was deferred. The postponement came as the film was yet to receive its censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), despite the application being submitted over a month ago. According to SSR Entertainments, the Kerala distributors of Jana Nayagan, the new target date is January 14, though an official confirmation from the producers, KVN Productions, is still awaited.
After the buzz around Jana Nayagan, Sivakarthikeyan’s upcoming film Parasakthi has also officially cleared the Censor Board. The Central Board of Film Certification has handed the movie a U/A 16+ certificate, just in time for its January 10 release.
The CBFC has filed an appeal against Madras HC order to issue UA certification to Jana Nayagan. The Chief Justice said if the writ appeal is filed today, it might be addressed today as well. The CBFC said the film had used emblems related to the armed forces, and they should be consulted by experts among the reasons for the appeal.
Reacting to the certification news, a fan @sharadverma6306 posted on X, "Fans calm. Confidence loud. Jana Nayagan loading with unstoppable force #jananayagan #madrashighcourt #thalapathyvijay."
After the Madras HC ordered CBFC to issue a censor certificate to Vijay's Jana Nayagan, the Additional Solicitor General made an urgent mention before the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, seeking an early hearing of a writ appeal against Justice Asha’s ruling. The Chief Justice indicated that the request would be considered, with the appeal likely to be taken up later on Friday or on Monday.
A fan @athirubanmp posted on X, "Even with the #jananayagan U/A certificate coming through today, an overseas release on 14/15 Jan is unrealistic — barely 20% of previous screens can be secured on such short notice. 23 Jan is the best window: no Hollywood clashes, time to program properly, and room for IMAX."
Not just Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan but uncertainty surrounds Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi release as well, as per reports. The film is facing certification hurdles with the CBFC, as per PTI. The lack of clarity over its clearance has raised questions about whether the film will meet its scheduled release date on January 10. Filmmaker Sudha Kongara, who directed Parasakthi, had earlier spoken positively about her experience with the censor board. In a conversation with Galatta Plus, she praised the CBFC’s approach, describing it as fair and democratic based on her interactions. READ MORE
KVN Productions approached the court after the film failed to obtain a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), despite submission over a month ago. On December 19, the board suggested cut and muted dialogues.
The court said in its verdict, "After reviewing the records, the court found it clear that the complainant’s grievance appears to be an afterthought. The Court held that the Chairperson’s exercise of power was without jurisdiction, as his authority to seek a review stood exhausted once he, on behalf of the Committee, informed that a UA certificate would be granted subject to cuts."

The Vijay film Jana Nayagan's digital rights for its Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video for Rs 121 crore (US$14 million), marking the highest-ever digital deal for a Tamil film, as per OTT PLay. The streaming rights were sold at a record price in March 2025, even as the Indian streaming market continues to face a downturn. Meanwhile, the Hindi version of the film will be made available for digital streaming only after completing an eight-week theatrical run. In addition, the satellite rights have been secured by Zee Tamil for Rs 64 crore (US$7.6 million), setting a new benchmark as the most expensive satellite deal for a Tamil film.

The Vijay's final film was first submitted to the CBFC on December 18. Following objections, the makers reportedly made around 27 cuts and resubmitted the film on December 22. But, the certificate was not issued.
As Jana Nayagan faced release hurdles, many members of the Tamil film industry, including prominent actors and filmmakers, extended solidarity to actor-turned-politician Vijay as the release of his much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan faced last-minute hurdles.
Another big budget Tamil film, Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, is also being held up over censor clearance. The release of Parasakthi, slated to follow Vijay's Jana Nayagan on Pongal, has reportedly been held up due to delays in obtaining certification from CBFC, triggering wider concern within the Tamil film industry about the censor process. As per a report by PTI, the industry sources said that the film, a big-budget production expected to open a day after Jana Nayagan on January 10, had not received clearance from the board as of Thursday evening.

Pongal 2026 was expected to be dominated by Vijay’s Jana Nayagan. However, the delay in the censor certification has pushed Jana Nayagan away from its planned January 9 release, effectively clearing the field for Siva Karthikeyan’s Parasakthi, directed by Sudha Kongara. The political action drama, made on an estimated budget of Rs 142 crore, now stands to emerge as the primary Pongal attraction. Read More Here.

Film producer G Dhananjheyan said via X, "Tamil & Telugu cinema industries require freedom in 2026 from:
1. Censor related delays and issues. This last minute issuance is a big pain to open ticket bookings. Producers also must apply for censor one month prior to release date.
2. Animal welfare board approval delays. Must be received within a week.
2. Show time approvals (extra show) for each film through a Govt. Order must be removed. 9 am to 2 pm any number of shows possible must be permitted to theatres.
3. Ticket price approvals in Telugu industry (for each film Telugu industry is waiting for ticket price increase approvals delaying ticket booking ) - must fix a upper limit for all centres and allow theaters to fix prices within that for weekends and week days. Not suggesting this for Tamil Cinema as it’s standard at ₹190/- maximum and audience are used to that now.
Hope we see some changes in the above if not all."

Vijay’s fans have been left deeply disappointed by the last-minute postponement of Jana Nayagan. But this is not the first time the star has faced such obstacles. Vijay has repeatedly found himself at the centre of controversies. While Mersal triggered a nationwide debate due to dialogues critical of policies like GST and demonetisation, drawing objections from political leaders, Sarkar too ran into trouble when scenes were perceived as commentary on governance and political freebies, leading to demands for cuts.
A fan @sridivyaoff shared via X, "Using politics to delay a film just to target an actor is shameful. Cinema is built by the hard work of many families and technicians. Theatres need to be more supportive for indie low budget films ... Coz Big Satellite & OTT players are not so keen to buy indie films leaving Theatres as only source for revenue for Low budget films.... Not giving theatres for low budget films literally means Killing Cinema !! For Big budget films... The strict timeline rules for Censors (India & Overseas ) is really hard to follow and puts lot of pressure on Filmmakers creative space during Post Production especially when ur doing a Big budget film with release date already announced... With current timeline rules for both Indian and overseas censors , the ideal time for a film to be fully completed is 3 months before release date... Which is Highly impossible for many reasons...This has to be streamlined and shud be made bit easy for Filmmakers... Both from the board the producers and the Stars... Otherwise postponement of Big films on festivals dates will eventually Kill Industry!! Please let's all together in Film fraternity keep aside the Fan wars, Political reasoning , Personal agendas, Hate Campaigns & join together to do something optimistic to Save the ART ...
