The state prisons department on Friday launched its website http://www.mahaprisons.gov.in. Officials said the website will help in tendering process, implementation of Right To Information and better communication between the department and citizens.
At present, the state has nine central jails,28 district jails, five open jails, one open colony and 172 sub-jails. For women, there are two separate jails and an open jail in Mumbai and Pune. The jail department has been in news recently after the alleged murder of suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Qateel Siddiqui at Yerawada central jail.
Meeran Borwankar, who recently took over as head of Maharashtra prisons department, said,”It was really surprising that the department did not have a website of its own. The website will bring all the functioning of the department to the fore and any information about the department would be just a click away.”
The website has sections on history of prisons, correctional programmes, establishment and products from various manufacturing units run by jails and jail farms. Borwankar added,”There are a range of products from our manufacturing units – furniture items, handloom and bakery products. Many people do not know about our farm produce. All these will now be communicated to people and will be just a click away.” Officials said for the first few days the website will be visible on http://www.mahaprisons.maharashtra.gov.in.
She said the website was made with support from IT Secretary Rajesh Agarwal and MahaOnline’s Satnam Sethi and Sumit Singh. Those who contributed in the development of the website were jail department senior officers, including Swati Sathe,Rajendra Dhamne,Yogesh Desdai and Ramesh Kamble and staff officer Sandip Jagtap.
