Patients suffering from cartilage defects caused either due to sports injuries,road traffic accidents or early arthritis need no longer undergo time consuming surgeries. Pune-based Dr Sachin Tapasvi performed two consecutive Autologous Chondrocyte Implantations (ACI) in just 20 minutes.

Tapasvi,senior orthopedic surgeon at Oyster and Pearl Hospital,performed the back-to-back operations on two patients. For this particular ACI surgery,he had two patients in the late 20s and early 30s. They suffered from an Osteochondron injury in the left knee. Medically known as Condyle,with a defect size of 30 by 30 mm,Tapasvi performed the ACI surgery in less than 18 minutes.

New technology within the field of cartilage regeneration has helped doctors to implant autologous cartilage cells through the process of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI). ACI includes the patient’s own cartilage tissue harvesting,culturing it in the GMP Cell Processing Centre of RMS Regrow® and then re-implanting the cultured cells at the defect area in the joint. This continues to be a great option where the knee replacement surgeries can be avoided especially in younger people and athletes,”said Tapasvi.

Cartilage defects affect 61 per cent of middle aged people. Almost 80 per cent of these defects develop into osteoarthritis thereby causing functional problems to such patients. There are certain procedures that can be done through arthroscopic surgery to relieve the patient’s symptoms which includes microfracture,drilling and abrasion arthroplasty. While these procedures alleviate symptoms,Tapasvi points out that it is a temporary repair.
