Polka dotted dreams

Anjum,a third year student at INIFD Deccan,is amongst 30 winners whose designs were selected from over 1000 entries. She is still surprised that her entries made such an impression on the judges. “I was busy with college work and so I had to draw my designs in four days and send it over. I did not think I’d end up winning,” Anjum says. Vogue Honours is organized every year and visits the top 100 college campuses to invite design entries from students. Anjum had entered the 2011 edition of the contest and designed her entries around the theme,‘The Swinging 70s’.

In the days leading up to her submission,Anjum took a lot of help from her her professors,who helped her understand fashion from that period. “I went on Google to see what people wore then. I noticed that polka dots,stripes and checks were popular and that girls wore frocks and jumpsuits then,” she says.

Her designs included knee length frocks,a skirt-and-top combination,Palazzo pants with a polka-dotted top and,her personal favourite,a jumpsuit with red and black polka dots and stripes. Anjum picked the jumpsuit as her entry for the next round of the contest,for which the 30 winners were required to pick their favourite design from the previous round. Vogue will shortlist five designs that they will display at the ‘Fashion Nightout 2012’ show in Delhi,and also put on sale.

Anjum,a resident of Karvenagar,won Rs. 15,000 from the contest and hopes that her design will go on to the next round as well. In the meanwhile,she is looking for design and illustration jobs in the fashion industry. Her design idols are Neeta Lulla,Manish Malhotra,Satya Paul and Tommy Hilfiger. “I hope I can work with some of these designers in the future,” says Anjum.
