Cynics across the globe have taken a long time to warm up to newer genres of music like hip-hop and rap that have garnered a steady fan following over the years. And if fan following were a way to measure the popularity of a rapper, then it would put Flo Rida, one of the biggest hip-hop acts to hit the charts,in the league of artistes like African Bambaataa,Dr Dre,Public Enemy and the likes. Performing in the city on September 26 at the Solaris Lawns, rapper and singer Flo Rida feels that concerts like these are a free exchange of love. Concerts are a give and take of love which is what I look forward to most. I always put a smile on people’s faces when I’m performing – that’s what it’s all about! he says.
Flo Rida, whose real name is Tramar Dillard, says that coming from a background where music was encouraged helped him in his formative years. I have been rapping since the ninth grade. My first group Groundhoggz was formed with my buddies. When I began I was just a plain newbie, working hard in the studios. I then approached many labels, rapped with a few artistes and climbed the ladder to get my own single in 2006, he reveals.
Having made it to the big stage,Flo Rida became a popular name with his first album Mail On Sunday and his first chart-buster Low. Speaking about his collaboration with T-Pain for his maiden album,he adds,One of T-Pain’s boys,Tay Dizm, was talking about how he met some fine girl on Zoosk. He spoke about how good she looked and we finally hit upon an idea for a song. The jokes in fact turned into a song and that’s how Mail on Sunday happened. In addition, the album featured songs like Elevator produced by Timbaland and In the Ayer featuring will.i.am.
Flo Rida believes that performing with other artistes helps enhance his own musical style. This was probably why my song Club Can’t Handle Me was featured on the soundtrack for the film Step-Up 3D, he says, adding,Since I shared a great rapport with the guys at Disney,I opened my vaults and let them hear whatever they wanted. They picked Club Can’t Handle Me.
He promises that his performance in the city will be full of good music, groovy tracks and a lot of entertainment. And who knows,he might just work in India too! I am always open to creating good music. If I get an opportunity,I will surely work on it here in India, he says.
(Flo Rida will be performing at the Solaris Lawns in Koregaon Park on September 26 at 6 pm)
