Pune man held for making derogatory statement against Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar

An officer said that in February, Kadam had put up a social media post in which he made derogatory and casteist comments against Dr Ambedkar and also made remarks against Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.

The Mumbai Police crime branch has arrested a Pune resident for allegedly making derogatory statements against Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on a social media platform.

The accused, identified as Ashruba Kadam (31), who hails from Beed, was working at a garage in Pune from where he was arrested last week. According to the police, the accused had told his family that he was preparing for UPSC exams in Delhi and they were shocked to find out he was working in Pune after the police informed them.

An officer said that in February, Kadam had put up a social media post in which he made derogatory comments against Dr Ambedkar and also made remarks against Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. “The remarks were casteist in nature and had the possibility of fomenting trouble. As soon as we received a complaint, we registered an FIR and got the content deleted,” an officer said.

Later, based on technical details, the police tracked down Kadam from Pune on Saturday following which he was placed under arrest. He was produced before the court and remanded to police custody. An officer said that Kadam had told his family that he was preparing for UPSC in Delhi but was actually working at a garage in Pune.
When asked why he had uploaded such content, the accused allegedly told the police that he got carried away in the moment as he felt strongly for an issue and uploaded the content.

The officer said he had a mild deformity to his leg and he had a disability certificate made so that he would be eligible for the disability quota in UPSC when he applied. However, based on his questioning, it did not appear he had prepared for UPSC at all.

Probe into threat mail

The Mumbai Police is probing a threat e-mail received by various senior Mumbai Police officers threatening blasts in the city on March 22. It referred to the serial blasts that took place in Mumbai on March 22, 1993 that caused 257 fatalities. An official said that the e-mail was sent from proton mail and they are trying to track down the sender.
