A Delhi Police constable risked his life to avert a major tragedy after a gas cylinder caught fire in a four-storey residential building in Dwarka’s Mohan Garden area on Saturday night, officers said.
According to officials, a PCR call was received around 9:39 pm regarding a cylinder blast in the building. The information was immediately relayed to Inspector Mukesh Antil, SHO, Mohan Garden police station. While rushing to the spot, the SHO alerted the beat staff.
Before the PCR van, fire brigade or senior officers could reach the location, Constable Anil Mahla, who was on beat duty in the area, reached the building and found a gas cylinder on fire inside a kitchen. With flames spreading and thick smoke filling the premises, the Constable took a split-second decision to intervene, police said.
He single-handedly pulled the burning cylinder out of the kitchen and managed to douse the fire, preventing it from spreading further. Police said the building houses 16 families, and an immediate evacuation of all residents was not possible at that moment.
His prompt action helped avert what could have been a major explosion and saved several lives, police added.
