When Jaideep Pardeshi made a patient century in Mumbai’s second innings against Maharashtra during the third day of final of the u-19 Cooch Behar Trophy at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, the 19-year-old couldn’t stop himself from recalling how his loyalties changed from Maharashtra to Mumbai when he moved from Junnar,a small taluka near Pune to Mumbai.
It was just a few years ago when young Jaideep’s father decided his child ought to be pursuing cricket in Mumbai and soon he got him admission to Hansraj School in Andheri which saw the young boy staying in a hostel for the next five years. Jaideep recalls how the initial nights were spent crying and in wretched homesickness, which made it difficult to focus on cricket.
It was tough to move from Junnar. I just wanted to run away sometimes. Days went by easily but nights used to be tough. I was just 12-years-old when I moved to Mumbai. It took me a year to get used to it, Jaideep, who will be playing in his last season in the Mumbai U-19,explained.
On Monday, after taking a 23 run-first innings lead, the onus was once again on the batsmen to deliver. It was Jaideep’s day, who’s innings was due so far. He was dropped at his score of zero but what came next was 275 balls 125 runs innings which saw Mumbai on driver seat at stumps. Jaideep was also involved in 171 runs opening stand with his Akarshit Gomel, who slammed 53. This is my last season in Under-19. Last year things didn’t go as expected, and I was in and out of the team. This season I have scored 550 runs. This is my second hundred and I had knocks of 91 and 64 runs. I was due for big scores, he added.
