The camera and the colour palette have rivaled each other always, one scoring a point where the other falls short, but it is a rare thing to find a combination of the best of both in one.

The camera and the colour palette have rivaled each other always, one scoring a point where the other falls short, but it is a rare thing to find a combination of the best of both in one.

An exhibition that opened at the Rajya Lalit Kala Akademi,Lal Baradari,Qaiserbagh on Wednesday, showcases photographs taken by third-year students of Bachelor of Fine Arts of the Integral University,Lucknow.

“We have been trained in the use of color and composition to give an appeal to the pictures we paint. We applied the same rules in our photographic repertoire,” says Rahil Ayub, the student who put up the show along with his classmates Mohd Ashraf Khan,Firoz Ahmad,Sadia,Aiman Asif Khan,Saman Sharma,Darakhshan Munquad,Kashifa Asif Khan and Rupa Modi. “We have undergone complete training in the photography art too and so we are able to integrate it with the medium of painting,” says Rahil.

The results are spectacular. Exhibits comprise mostly still art,in which objects have been photographed, but there are also themes like ‘Lucknow by night’ in which there are striking silhouettes of the Shaam-e-Avadh. Refreshingly,it is not the routine stuff like the monuments or parks but shots in the dark of a city that is learning not to sleep so early.

“Our subjects are mostly still objects but there is no artistry of the Photoshop kind applied to the pictures,” says Mohd Ashraf Khan, adding that the pictures were all taken with digital cameras and only developed on Adobe.

The pictures are all specimens of practical art and match the most modern décor of home or office and are even up for sale till 11AM to 7PM in this exhibition on till April 24.
