Manhole deaths: Cops search for supervisor

police could not identify the accused supervisor of the Sewerage Treatment Plant run by a private company in the area, who had allegedly asked the labourers to enter into the tank without safety gears.

A day after two workers were asphyxiated to death and the third got injured while cleaning a choked sewage in the city’s cantonment area, the police could not identify the accused supervisor of the Sewerage Treatment Plant run by a private company in the area, who had allegedly asked the labourers to enter into the tank without safety gears.

Station Officer of Cantonment police station Raj Bahadur Sahu said an FIR has been lodged against an unnamed supervisor on the complaint of one of the deceased labourer’s mother for causing death by negligence on Saturday.

Three workers named Dinesh (26),Babloo (24),and Munna (25) had entered a fifteen-foot deep manhole of a sewage, part of the STP operated by Maytas Private Limited, using stairs in Nirbhay Vihar colony. As Dinesh opened the choked sewer line, the poisonous gas which emanated from it made both Dinesh and Babloo faint and subsequently fall in the sewer, police said. However,Munna, who was standing on the upper rungs of the stair had been able to come out of the manhole.

The labourers were brought by the Maytas supervisor after receiving a complaint from residents of the colony.
