With the Samajwadi Party and the BJP in agitation mode, the Congress has also decided to get activated. The party will organise a rally in the city in the last week of March in protest against the Uttar Pradesh Urban Local Self Government Laws (Second Amendment) Bill 2011. The SP began its three-day agitation on Monday against crime and corruption in the state, while the BJP is launching a two-day protest on Wednesday against the change in the election procedure of urban local bodies. Congress leaders felt that,in these circumstances, inactivity on its part may send out a message the party was soft on the government.

To begin with, the party would organise a signature campaign against the bill in all the districts on March 10. The next day,it would submit a memorandum, containing one crore signatures to the Governor. State Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said,“We are not sitting idle. We have met the Governor twice and are holding workers’ conventions in districts and public meetings in Assembly constituencies.”
