Group exhibitions of young artists are a norm but Nidhi Jain,director of Gallery Ragini,would rather show them in a solo. With one or two works it is difficult to judge an artist. It is important to see a whole body of work, says Jain. So to fulfill the objective she has tied-up with Choko La in a year-long programme,where each month works of a young artist will be put on the walls of the Khan Market branch of the chocolate lounge. The space attracts a lot of people so the visibility will be high. The artist will not be charged and we will only take a commission if a work sells, adds Jain as she readies to transport the work of Delhi-based artist Suchit Sahni from her Lado Sarai gallery to Khan Market. To be put on the walls on Friday,the acrylics of the 30-year-old reflect the urban metropolis. If one work paints cars on the road,another has a rickshaw puller and on one canvas Sahni portrays a hawker against the cityscape. He has grasped the pulse of the city and portrayed the metropolis in a riot of colours, says Jain. During the last year she has travelled across India,from Baroda to Santiniketan,in search of young talent. On exhibition next will be the work of Lucknow-based RC Pandey,followed by Hong Kong based Gabriella Montanari. We will even showcase tribal art later and if all goes well we might extend the project beyond a year, smiles Jain.
